PROBLEM: NY Yanks holding 'Paul O'Neill Day' (but Vax Mandate bars him from Field!)

Insanity.
The NY Yankees are retiring former Bomber great Paul O'Neill's #21 and having a ceremony.
BUT there's one HUGE snag:
MLB still has a Covid Vax mandate in place. Paul O'Neil is NOT VAXXED.
Thus, Paul O'Neill is technically prohibited from the field and ANY interaction with the players. He's also a Yankee announcer -- but because of te Covid Vaxx policy does games FROM HIS HOUSE (instead of IN the booth.)
The club has also inviting several former teammates from the Dynasty Years to be there (Jeter, Marino Rivera, Jorge Posada) But not only is Paul O'Neill NOT Vaxxed -- word is THEY are also NOT VAXXED.
What are MLB and NY Yankees going to do??

How Yankees and YES will try to salvage the awkwardness of Paul O’Neill Day
By Andrew Marchand, August 10, 2022
NY POST SPORTS
For the entire season, Paul O’Neill’s appearances on telecasts of Yankees games have been slightly awkward. While the rest of YES’s announcers have been on site, the unvaccinated O’Neill has been working from his home in Cincinnati.
O’Neill is not allowed in the YES booth because the network has a vaccine mandate in the workplace and, according to sources, O’Neill is not vaccinated against COVID-19.
MLB’s protocols dissuade unvaccinated people from being on the field by disallowing contact with any players and also prohibit anyone not vaccinated from entering dugouts and clubhouses.
So, O’Neill is working from home.
While the Yankees would not say which former stars are scheduled to show up Aug. 21, it would be fitting if Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and, heck, maybe even Derek Jeter, graced The Bronx to see No. 21 unveiled.
The Yankees are doing their best to keep the status quo for the ceremony, but will have to make some concessions prior to the game.
O’Neill will be allowed to be on the field, because, if the rules are followed, no current players will be out there. They will be able to watch from the dugout.
That is due to MLB’s rules, which are designed to keep players from interacting with the unvaccinated. The players are the “protected class.”

I wonder if he ever caught a fly ball in his hat like he promised that little dying boy

Are you sure they aren't letting him on the field? The Yankee's players will watch from their dressing room, but not everyone else is my understanding.
Otherwise, why would he even attempt to be there in person or with these other greats?

Should've held an Earth is Flat day instead to educate those damn liberal New Yorkers.

Word is....MLB and the Yankees are going to try and "compromise" (otherwise -- what's the use of 'Paul O'Neill Day'?)
Obviously pretty dumb planning (and policy).
It's a PR disaster either way, reminding everyone how stupidly insane the MLB/Stadium Vaxx Policy is.

You reply makes as much sense as the Earth being flat, so at least you're consistent.

It's Clown World for a million reasons, but get this:
Paul O'Neill is one of the Yankee game announcers.
Since he's prohibited from the Booth he must watch the game on TV monitor and co-announce games from...his home in Cincy 600 miles away!

Every time I hear/see the name Paul O'Neill, my mind immediately goes to one of the most incredible plays I've ever seen:
FYI: That was in the bottom of the 10th inning in a tie game. The Reds went on to lose anyways, but that kicksave literally stopped the game winning run from scoring in that moment. Amazing

And as an avid viewer of the YES channel, I have to say, he's doing a good job.
It's OK with me he's doing it from home. That's the way I'm watching it too.

That play was even more incredible than catching a fly ball in his hat.

Is this guy one of those "Believes in every single conspiracy theory and thinks that makes him smart or interesting, when actually it just makes him stupid" people?

His baseball reference page says "Bats: Left, Throws: Left, Kicks: Left"

I have COVID brain fog right now, so can anyone reconcile the information in the OP with this information about unvaccinated players not being able to play but specifically only in Toronto?

Thanks for the Toronto Jays COVID guidelines...(Canada is totally insane and apparently holding the Vaxx Line with no exception.)
IMO this issue is purposely and tactical vague with respect to MLB policies elsewhere (as in NY), leaving it to the ballclubs and their respective City overlords.
I believe MLB is playing a "DON'T ASK DON'T TELL" Covid policy game in the US.
(Your ESPN link noted Aaron Judge chose to be mum on declaring *his* official Vaxx status -- and no one pushed the issue.)

If MLB had any balls, they'd make the Blue Jays play their home games in Buffalo or Dunedin again until Canada fixes their fricked up covid policies.
