Just read about former PGA Tour player being recently diagnosed as Autistic. I still just can’t believe a golfer playing at such a high level and struggling with processing information can just not know he’s autistic for 54 years. $23 million in career earnings. Got me thinking, have there been any other professional athletes that have been diagnosed as autistic or maybe some kind disorder that they thrived in spite of?

The golfer, now competing on the Champions Tour, revealed to Sports Illustrated's Stephanie Apstein that he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in 2019. He said he functions at a high level, but with some challenges that he's now working on.

Yep, there's a video on youtube called, "How Zach Greinke Became the Weirdest Player in Baseball". If you watch it you can see that he definitely has the signs of someone on the spectrum.

That is an insult to Downs sufferers everywhere. They are mentally handicapped, LeBron is fricking retarded.

Golf seems like the perfect sport/activity for someone that can become obsessed with small details and often prefers isolation.

Yes. He had severe ADHD. Would also leave the mound to pet puppies. Threw two complete game shutouts in one day because the owner said if he pitched again he would pay for a fishing trip. Left right after the game

I think a solitary pursuit like golf would lend itself to someone on the spectrum. Where you might run into more problems is in a team sport. I'm a little on the spectrum myself, as I suspect quite a few here are. If you met me you probably wouldn't notice anything different. I get along okay in the world and compare well to my peer group careerwise. If you got to know me better (you probably wouldn't, I keep most people at arm's length) you'd notice I obsess about certain things and have difficulty understanding other people's emotions.

Not an athlete, but I've always thought Chip Kelly might be on the spectrum.

I briefly looked it up a while back and found an article or two hinting that others have thought the same over the years.

Chip is just anti social and hates people. In another life he’d have been an accountant.

There are probably a lot more coaches and quarterbacks with Asperger's than anyone knows about, especially coaches.

To be that obsessed with watching film, studying the game, etc... to where you're sleeping in the office after working 18 hour days and enjoying it says something.
