"Second shot golf course"

I just heard Azinger characterize Erin Hills as a
"second shot golf course".
I've heard other courses called the same.
Can someone educate on me on precisely what this means?
And while you're at it, can you also provide me with good examples of first shot golf courses, third shot golf courses, and fourth shot golf courses?
TIA.

It's a make or miss league

So if you hit a good tee shot, you pick up and move to the next hole.
Is that how it works?

A 2nd shot golf course is one where the fairways are inviting and not too punishing but position in them is key in order to have a nice look on your next shot.

Are you being a count?

Ive never heard this term before, but I'd imagine it means the fairways are relatively wide all the pros should be relatively around the same area off the tee. So it becomes who can hit their iron closest to the hole leaving uphill putts giving themselves the best looks at birdie.

i kind of interpret the term to mean that basically everyone will be on the fairway (assuming an average shot) and your position on the fairway really doesnt matter. it's all about your second shot and if you can get birdie looks from it.

It means the course failed the first time they opened it 30 years ago then new ownership took over and changed the menu in the clubhouse and this is their second shot at getting it right.

Speaking of failed, some dude just broke the Open record with a 63 and there are a bunch of dudes bunched up at 8 and 9 under. You know the USGA is sick.

Make it par 70 like they usually do and everyone is bunched up at -4

This course was designed to be dry and windy...it's been neither.

The USGA has been generous setting the course up this week and have been the last few us opens. The USGA today isn't the USGA of old. The days of over par winning opens may be gone.
Oakmont last year was a far cry from Oakmont 2007 and it wasn't just weather

You don't have to pipe your drive 330 down the middle every time to be successful. It's more about where you leave your drive to give yourself a good angle to the pin.

means the course is laid out like Dealey Plaza in Dallas
