Before the no-huddle offense infiltrated football, offenses huddled up and defenses had more time to respond to the offensive personnel on the field, creating more of true “chess match” between the coaches. Offenses had to gain yards by making the “right” play calls and executing them against defenses that were more prepared. With the no-huddle offense, offenses took advantage of rules that allowed them to change this dynamic. Now, offenses are getting a lot of their yards simply by “playing fast.” The football product was watered down as a result.

One of the only weaknesses to this no-huddle system is that since offenses aren’t huddling up, they have to signal in their plays. Now offensive coaches want to take advantage of the rules and run no-huddle but also don’t want to take responsibility for changing their signals game to game. Sorry, but that’s bullshite. If any fan can sit across your sideline and see your signals and note the playcall, your opposition should be able to do the same. It’s not only fair, but it should be encouraged to get this amateur bullshite out of football.

I actually agree with this.

The idea you can't scout the other team and find tells is anti competitive

Coaches really should have one player on offense and defense with the radio in their helmet to get signals. It works very well at the pro level

Go back to the old way of yelling it in a TE or WR's ear then sending him in to tell the QB.

Absolutely.

In baseball, we continually changed signals. Not sure why football coaches cant evolve around this. Its like card counting in 21, if you outsmart the house you should win, but they rig the gam.

Well what you stated is totally legal. It’s legal to steal signs from across the field.

What’s not legal is go scout opponent’s games and use technology to film opponent’s signs and steal their playbook in advance of the actual game.

As just about every coach has stated, there is BIG difference between the two. And the latter creates an enormous advantage.

It is allowed. Everyone does it at every level. The issue is with the way Michigan did it via going to games and recording them. Most teams use more than 1 guy signaling to try and alleviate the stealing on signs. Still, many teams have them figured out by halftime.

I don't even see an issue with this. If you are giving calls in a way which someone can sit in the stands and figure them out, then you have to be smart enough to either change signs consistently or give calls a different way.

Wait til you learn about teams going to scout opponents games and using technology to film opponents plays and identify their strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies in advance of the actual game

How much you want to bet colleges don’t do this because they’re too cheap?

That was a big deal maybe 20+ years ago.
It's not 1950 anymore. We all have a video recorder in our pocket.
So i can go record the sidelines as a fan, figure out the calls, and send that to my team and they can choose to use that or not, but i can't do that if i'm an employee of the team.
Why isn't it illegal to watch the all 22 of your opponents? What the hell is the difference?

It's just an antiquated rule in todays cell phone world.
And all of this could be resolved by letting the teams call in plays like the NFL has been doing for decades. IF they are goign to let college catchers/pitchers recieve the pitch on a fricking wrist watch, then let the OC talk to his QB in the huddle.

Watching people like you learn that it was never about "sign stealing" has been one of the better parts of all this.

I disagree. Seeing OSU fans swarm all over this in outrage has been one of the better parts of all of this. I don't have a dog in the Mich/OSU rivalry, but I want to see Michigan crush OSU this year just for the laughs.

This has nothing on LSU fans acting like the SEC and Alabama collude to keep LSU down every year.

Nah. Watching you and the collective OSU fanbase whine like the self-entitled children you are over this nothing-burger has definitely been the best part of this.

My unpaid high school assistants had camcorders in 1995.

This used to be called scouting.
