Before the Belmont the Bid stepped on a pin that would cost him the race. 26 wins in 30 starts.... one because of a pin in his hoof, one a close loss to the great Affirmed because he missed his prep race. Spectacular Bid's time in the Preakness was better than either of Seattle Slew's, Affirmed, or Secretariat's... all Triple Crown winners.

As a 1-5 favorite, the Belmont was probably one of the most shocking and disappointing losses in sports history. A great champion deserved better than a safety pin embedded in his hoof.

Another possibility: Affirmed... the horse that simply refused to lose over faster and more imposing beasts.

First off, the greatest horse ever is Man O War. Seriously, go look up a wiki on him or something. Hell, his only loss is what gives us the term "Upset"

That said, Secretariat's Preakness time is famously wrong. their was a clock malfunction and therefore an inaccurate read. So Secretariat should own that track record, too.

And who else feels bad for Sham, the horse which finished second to Secretariat in all three Triple Crown races?

Sham finished last at the Belmont, but I feel bad for him. He would have won the triple crown if it wasn't for Secratariat. In the Belmont he wasted all his energy trying to keep up with Secratariat.

How can they put Seabiscuit under War Admiral even though he beat him head to head?

I know that Seabiscuit never raced in any of the triple crown races, but he beat the horse that did.

Man o' War
Secretariat
Citation
Kelso
Count Fleet
Dr. Fager
Native Dancer
Forego
Seattle Slew
Spectacular Bid

Hard to argue with this list from the link above. Some of these horses such as Kelso were dominant but didn't get the fan fair because they didn't run/win the Derby. All of these are awesome horses and except for the top three you could rearrange them in almost any order and no one could argue.

The same way you don't put Illinios ahead of tOSU or Kentucky ahead of LSU.

Arkansas and Kenntucky should be BCS champs, I know they didn't play in the BCS CG but they beat the team that did.

Something like 75% of top throughbreeds are decendents of #7, Native Dancer.

Sorry, but Man O War couldn't do this... the most exciting event ever in sports:

He is moving like a tremendous machine!

ETA: And it is my great fortune that I witnessed it live. You knew he was going to win... he was a superhorse. So, OK... let's get this over with. But Secretariat would not have it so anticlimactic... no way!

Could Man O War do THIS?:

A breathtaking backstretch

Can you tell that I was fond of Big Red? He was "superstar" personified... not only the greatest race horse ever but the best-looking, too. And he knew he was all that.

This is quite interesting:

Dr. Thomas Swerczek, the veterinarian who performed the necropsy, found that Secretariat's heart was the largest he had ever seen in a horse — approximately three times the size of a normal horse's heart. Dr. Swerczek states in correspondence:

"Certainly, after performing autopsies on several thousand thoroughbred horses, including mares and stallions, no other horse came close to Secretariat's heart size . . .

" . . . The second largest heart I found was the heart of Sham, who actually broke the Kentucky derby record, but still lost to Secretariat. Sham's heart weighted 19 pounds. The third largest heart I found was stallion Key to the Mint, which was 16 pounds. The majority of all others were smaller, in the range of 10 to 12 pounds. Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat had an average size heart. The heart size seemingly is inherited from the female side of the pedigree. "

I know I've never done this:

Rex--

I've probably watched that Belmont more than anything else on youtube.

Staggering to see what horses came from his bloodline.

I love Secretariat, too. but I have a message for him: get your own nickname. Big Red was already taken. By Man O War. There's no shame in being #2 all time.

And yes, Man O War COULD do that, seeing as how he once won a race by 100 lengths. That's right, 100.

we used to always joke about the horses man o' war ran against. pictured them as like field mules strapped to a plow....and man o' war flies by them, taking another triple digit length win....

My Dad pulled me to the TV when I was 7 years old to watch that event. He could not have known less about horse racing, but the event was that big at the time.

Any other year SHAM takes at least two of three crown races. Nobody could beat BIG RED that year.

A tremendous machine!!

1988 Belmont winner RISEN STAR Big Red's son destroyed the field almost like his pop.
