This choice is NOT just about stats.

So you post everything except the actual numbers?

And it's a damn tough question. Starting from scratch with no one else on my roster I think I'd go with Hakeem

Hakeem Olajuwon had the perfect combination of athleticism and skill. I love his autobiography, especially when he talks about maturing as a player and learning to block shots towards his teammates.

Are we picking Ramadan Hakeem, Nigerian Akeem, or Americanized Hakeem?

All day. Not because Duncan isn't a legend but because Hakeem was a freakish athlete with no flaws on either end of the floor. And as mentioned, he played in the great big man era.

A few things.

1. I didn't include things like assists because both have low assist numbers. Who cares if one of them has 0.5 assists more than the other when they both average low assists. No point.

2. And I didn't include all of the advanced stats because there is a lot more volatility when it comes to advanced stats... especially between different eras. It also matters what team each plays on. Many of those stats are dependent of team success and not individual success.

3. The only advanced stat I considered posting was TS%, because it's a tangible advanced stat. It's simply a combined shooting percentage. But I didn't include it because they are virtually tied.

Duncan. He is the best player of the Post-Jordan era.

So Hakeem gets docked because he played when Jordan did?

My pick would easily be Olajuwon because he doesn't play "boring" and "uninteresting" basketball like Duncan does.

When players have multiple championships and appearances in the NBA Finals, then I think it's silly to directly compare the number.

The reason being if a player has multiple championships, it shows that they can lead a team to a title. Which means all of the times that player didn't win the title, it wasn't his fault. He simply was not on a teams good enough. Because the player has proven he can win.

For example... Jordan has "only" 6 titles. He didn't win the title 9 times. Those 9 times are not a reflection of Jordan as a player... it means his team simply wasn't good enough to get it done. He's proven he's a championship-caliber player.

Yep.

Duncan - great player, had some great teams.

But Hakeem was one of those players who you look for each decade...that dominant freak, Wilt, Kareem, Shaq who changes everything the opposing team does on both ends of the court.

You could always attack the Spurs to the bucket after David Robinson left...you couldn't attack the Rockets.

The better question is who is the best all time Spur?
Out of this all time starting line up

Gervin
Admiral
Timmy
Alvin
Parker

Leonard will replace Alvin eventually

Hakeem did it in the big man era. Had to do it against better competition.

When Duncan started in 97 all the best big men of the 90s were still playing - and he went up against prime Shaq who was probably the best big man in the last 25 years (till at least Kareem)

Robinson retired 02-03
Ewing retired 01-02
Shaq retired 10-11
Smits retired 99-00
Hakeem retired 01-02
Mourning retired 07-08
Mutombo retired 08-09
Divac retired 04-05

I think it is a coin flip. Both are legendary players.
