Tim McMahon’s full story on Luka’s Dallas departure now up on ESPN

Long story, worth reading for sure, but here’s the bulletpoints for folks needing a basic rundown:
Overview of Events:
• In August 2023, the Dallas Mavericks traveled to Springfield, MA to celebrate Dirk Nowitzki’s Hall of Fame induction.
• Days after the trip, Mavs GM Nico Harrison informed Casey Smith (Director of Health & Performance) via video call that he was being let go, despite Smith being in Ohio attending to his dying mother.
Casey Smith’s Firing and Fallout:
• Smith was seen as a trusted figure by Dirk Nowitzki and Luka Doncic.
• His firing was reportedly due to being “too negative,” seen as not a “yes-man” to Nico.
• Many inside the organization believe Harrison felt threatened by Smith’s influence.
• Smith’s exit started a restructuring of the Mavs’ medical/performance staff, including the later firing of Jeremy Holsopple and Casey Spangler.
Consequences of Smith’s Departure:
• Dirk Nowitzki distanced himself from the franchise and stopped participating in team operations.
• Scott Tomlin, longtime VP of basketball communications and a close ally of Dirk and Luka, also resigned.
• The firings alienated Luka Doncic, whose relationship with the team began to unravel after Smith’s dismissal.
Tensions Between Medical Staff:
• Harrison hired Johann Bilsborough and Keith Belton to replace the prior team, but the two clashed from the beginning.
• Belton lacked required NBA strength coach certifications and was described as “a glorified cheerleader.”
• A heated confrontation between Bilsborough and Belton occurred over Dereck Lively’s injury mishandling.
• The dysfunction in the medical department led to multiple player injuries being aggravated or mismanaged.
Luka Doncic’s Role and Departure:
• Doncic’s performance team (including Javier Barrio Calvo and Anze Macek) clashed with Harrison’s new staff.
• Doncic never worked with Belton and had little trust in Bilsborough.
• Frustrations peaked over: 1) Disagreements on injury diagnoses and recovery timelines; 2) Harrison’s perception that Doncic had gained weight; 3) Disputes about whether Doncic should travel with the team or rehab in Dallas.
Other Notable Points:
• The new medical staff has been criticized by team insiders, with inconsistent communication and questionable player care.
• Jalen Brunson praised the former Mavs medical staff after leaving for the Knicks, who saw improved injury outcomes under Smith and Mau.
• Mark Cuban attempted to intervene on Luka’s behalf but had been sidelined from basketball operations by Harrison and new team governor Patrick Dumont.

It was already bad for Nico but he might legitimately be in danger now

McMahon has it out for Dallas and Nico. Excited to read

Firing a dude through FaceTime while he’s out of state with his dying mother is ghoulish, even going beyond his basketball incompetence.

Mavs giving the Cowboys a run for it with all of the off field sports drama.
Good-ness

Nico is either really incompetent or the ownership said frick the old regime and old group, we're moving past this era and IDGAF -- do it.

This tells everyone you're just a big a-hole with little man syndrome.

Trust me when I say, we fans of the Pelicans know how this feels with Ochsner at the helm.

One is not qualified and the other replaced a league-wide trusted person...not hard to figure that out.

Considering he got hired RIGHT after to the NYK - says Dallas fricked up
- Brunson 65 games
- KAT 72 games
- Anunoby 74 games
- Bridges 82 games
- Hart 77 games
Anunoby & KAT fared better.
Bridges & Hart are iron-men
Brunson has been 60-70s his career

Tired of Mark Cuban trying to play the hero in this story. If his greedy arse didn’t sell the organization, he would have had the power to prevent this. But he wants the billions of dollars of profit he got to give up control while simultaneously saying he would have prevented this if he could have. He could have.

sort of gives you a glimpse inside the brain of a man who trade's the franchise player away for nothing in return.

Oh well. Move on. Leave the drama shite to the Kardashians

I still can’t believe a businessman as sophisticated as Cuban thought he was going to retain control of basketball operations with a handshake agreement. Once the NBA outlawed putting that language in the sale documents, he should have walked away from the deal.

This reads as the writer is a scorned ex gf
Always two sides to every story

Lots of BS but no mention of it being rigged by the league and Nico being the fall guy

2) Harrison’s perception that Doncic had gained weight;
Not a reason to trade Luka but this is as soft of a statement as I’ve ever seen.
This is easily verifiable via the scale one way or the other.
It’s not “perception”

Tim needs to do a full story on the Pelicans and the Saints on this topic alone. I'm sure there's a lot of meat there to put out a story.

Kind of a nothing burger article. TLDR, they fired medical staff that Luka liked and told him to join the team on a road trip.

IRC, wasn't he still going to have a say in the organization after the sale when it first came out?
According to AI
So what changed?

Nico deserves all the hate coming his way for this move, but I think framing it directly on him is letting the owners off the hook a bit for signing off on it in the first place. Regardless of any team moving conspiracy, that’s where the vitriol should untimely lie in the fanbase. Nico will be fired in 8 months and Luka still won’t be there. The owner that signed off on that move still will be and if you’re a Mavs fan, I wouldn’t let them off the hook by hiding behind the Nico heat.
