Was he a legitimate boxer or like the Harlem globetrotters of the boxing world? I don’t know much about him but seem to recall no one taking him seriously when I was growing up.

He was indeed legit. He fought Pride and K1 also. He hits like a Mack truck and moved really well for his size, dude was legit and knocked a bunch of people out.

Definitely a novelty. Still had bricks for hands.

My mistake. I'm not to knowledgeable. I just remember him always being really out of shape.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "legitimate".

He was more of a novelty in my opinion, but a novelty that could box. He couldn't compete for any real titles, but he could box.

Johnny Knoxville after getting his head busted open: “Is Butterbean okay?”

Butterbean was the real deal. Legitimate one touch power on anyone if he caught them right. Many tried to stand toe to toe with him and got their arse handed to them.

Absolutely legit

Brutal puncher

But when he fought other big guys who were athletic and were cautious of him, he usually lost.

when you talk about professional boxers across the entire spectrum, he's def considered legit.

He's not a club, journeymen type fighter but not quite a title contender

He was definitely a real boxer and was fairly skilled to be someone of his size. He only fought in 4 round fights though so I would consider him a skilled novelty act.

Butterbean was legit but became a novelty because of his size.

Just like Jared Lorenzen was a legit QB but happened to be like 300lbs.

He's a Pre Jake Paul, there's a reason why he only fought 4 Round Fights against Tomato Cans, he was extremely out of shape.
If Esch had fought Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield or Bowe, he would have been stopped relatively early(by the 4th Round).

I can't answer the question but in my only visit to MSG in NYC, I went to a Knicks/Nuggets game (both teams were horrible in the mid 90's) and sat next to Butterbean on the front row under the basket.

I told him I was from Alabama (I think he lived there at some point). He bought me a beer. That's all I got.

As to Lennox not sure he would stop him because of his style but Butterbean would look like Tyson looked after eating all of those jabs from Lennox. I say this because Butterbean was, what, 5'11" max. Lennox was a smart fighter and would know the only way he could lose that fight was to let Butterbean inside. He NEVER did that with people with power. He used his sledgehammer jab until they got tired. Bean had 10 losses as a boxer and only 2 by way of knockout. Those two styles would lead me to believe that Lennox would just abuse him for however many rounds the fight was scheduled for and cruise to a unanimous decision.

To be clear, Lennox could knock him out if he wanted that kind of fight. Guy was a boxing savant though, and would take the easy win and look like a monster doing it.

I guess it depends on what you consider legit. He lost a decision to Holmes when Holmes was over 50.

He slept a shite load of tomato cans but IMO he was never a legit "boxer". He was absolutely a novelty act, no one can dispute that, he also had incredible power and even decent skill for his morbidly obese size. However, if boxing was just on the radio nobody would know his name.
