re: What is a respectable bowling score ?

100 is the absolute minimum anybody over the age of 10 should bowl.
130-150 is respectable for somebody that goes 1-2 a year.
League bowlers should average 160-180

I go straight ball on the first bowl and clean them up with a nice slow curve. I used to go a few times a month and was averaging 160ish with a high score of 226, which is the only time I’ve broken 200. I think I had 9 straight spares and a couple strikes on the tenth frame.

i used to bowl, was bored, got in union league to drink after work, when we had 3 shifts and were on 2nd and got off at 8pm.
Never practiced, and just kept at it in the league. Cut to 3 years later, was carrying a 209 average, had 3 300's and a 299. Highest series was a 779
Best part about my 300's, i didn't even break 600. I was shooting so f'ing bad, my scores were like 139,139,300 119,140,300. Shot 2 of them when i moved to Florida at the Old Satellite Beach lanes on A1A.
There was a guy in our league, was a pro, and wore all of his 300 rings. i always lol'd. I have never worn my 300 rings, they sit in their boxes, some where in my closet.
Haven't bowled in 10 years. No one shot anymore, and i wasn't joining a league.
I thought it was cool to shoot a 300, but it's nothing i would pound my chest over

For twice a year, that is pretty darn good.

Dumb post.
How did you try to bowl 200+?
This is example of not understanding sports at all.
Anyone sane tries to get all 10 pins.
If you do, you get 300.

You should always be able to break 100. 10 pins a frame.
10 pins a frame = strike or spare. Which also gives you a bonus based on the next frame.
That's where you really make your points. Leave one pin each frame and you bowled a 90.

Your first post was to resurrect a thread from August 2016?

You didnt get it.
1242, one of the amusing things about td is people who are clueless who try to mock someone making the key point. They end up pointing out how dumb they are.

Somebody said bowling was for pussies, so this guy or gal was pissed enough to create an account or alter to retort.
This cat is serious about bowling.
I think my league handicap hovered around 145. I’d break 200 on rare occasion. We never practiced. Just showed up after work, had some beers, and hit it.
I’ve been once in the last decade and was relieved to break 100 each game. None of the other people in a large group that night had bowled much if at all, and only one other person was over 100 avg. for the night.

The way that I always approached bowling was to drink LOTS of beer. I figured that if I looked down the lane and saw 30 pins, hitting 10 was easy.

Not even close. PBA level would be 250+ using house oil patterns. The only reason they have lower averages is because they bowl on much harder oil patterns.
I average 185 bowling every other week and am not even close to the top bowlers in my league.

Good league bowlers-190-210
Average league bowlers- 150-190
Anything below 150 sucks
I'm around a 175 average in my league. I mostly agree with you except 210+ average doesn't mean someone is PBA level bowler. PBA lanes and oil patterns are designed to be a lot more challenging than what amateurs are bowling on at their local bowling alley.
Hell, even a lot of guys who average 200+ in their local rec league at one alley might struggle if you took them to an unfamiliar bowling alley...at least until they got used to the lanes a bit. Ball moves differently on varying types of lanes and oil patterns. The really good bowlers can adjust their line pretty quickly.

When I was a teenager In the mid 90s we’d go every Monday when the pool I worked at was closed in the summer for 6 dollars and bowl all day. I think the highest I ever got was 190 and that was bowling like 5 hours a week.
Now going once or twice a year I’ll be happy if I get 140-150

I feel like half the people in this thread are definitely lying.
But I'm not a great bowler at all, In fact, I suck. I do it just for fun with friends or family. So I may go bowling once or twice a year at the most. I usually average about 85 points. If i bowled over 100 I'm ecstatic. Highest I ever bowled was 150, have not touched that score since then.

No Bs'ing from me.
I do in fact have 3 300's and a 299.
1 of my 300's i did not get a ring, lady who ran the league fricked up, and did not pay for my ABC dues, so i shot it for shits and grins, instead of the diamond ring they give you.

Go to all star lanes during league nights and look at the averages. Most of these bowlers are 170+ bowlers.

I usually stay around 140-150 or so when I go once or twice a year. In college I took a bowling class and averaged 202 for the semester. That was bowling 4 hours a week with the same ball every day.

What does this mean? (seriously)
From someone who knows nothing about bowling other than bowling for fun, I always wondered how tournaments worked. I just assume dudes who bowl as their job should be able to regularly bowl perfect games. I'm sure thats naive, but I don't know why.
