This in a nutshell. Before a race walker can take his/her trailing foot off the ground, their lead foot has to have made contact with the ground.
Kind of like the race horse equivalent of harness racing where the horses can't break into a gallop and have to maintain a trot type pace.

She absolutely could not get it. 10 minutes in I figured out that she didn’t know that when people run or jog they spend time with both feet off the ground. Had to show her a picture to convince her. Idk how people can be so dumb
