What's the difference between a sack and a TFL on the QB?

If you run past the line of scrimmage, you can't be sacked because you are conisdered a ball carrier. QB draws/options, the QB is considered a ball carrier.

So even if you tackle teh QB behind the LOS, if he was considered "running the ball", then it's a TFL and not a sack?
Who makes that determination?

Maybe based on the blocking schemes.....but could be tricky call if it's a slow developing option-pass type play.

Fwiw, its usually pretty obvious if he's running some sort of option or draw. The scorer does I guess. Hell, who decides if a hit is an error or, well a hit.

Some are obvious...I'm wondering more about those plays where the QB stood in the pocket for a minute, then pulled it in to run, took a few steps running, but was still tackled behind the LOS.
Sack, or TFL?

Sack, unless he breaks the line of scrimmage, goes back behind the line of scrimmage, and gets tackled.

I'm up for that. Two weeks having to have a flattering picture of the opponent's QB as an avi?

exactly what I had in mind

I'm going home for the Saints game this weekend and won't have internet access, but I swear I'll put it up by Monday night when I get back.

Sounds good, though it'll be hard to find a Phillip Rivers one
Then again, Brady with the goat is the fatal flaw to this argument.

It's TIIIIIIIIIIIME

I'll make sure to find a good one, but god there are so many hilarious Philip Rivers pictures.

Official scorekeeper's discretion.

Depends if you're talking college or pros
In college sacks count towards running yardage so any tackle of the QB behind the line of scrimmage is a sack.
In the pro's a sack is counted against the passing game, whereas a designed run is toward running statistics. So the official score keeper decides if it's a designed run or if it was a passing play and hence a sack or a TFL.
... at least that's how i understand it

a sack comes on a passing down
TFL would come if it is a designed run and tackled behind the line.
not sure what the other guy is talking about, but once a player is pass the LOS you cannot get a sack or a TFL

I meant if you're trying Mike Vick stuff like crossing the line of scrimmage, and juking back behind it to gain more yards and getting tackled, its a TFL.

I thought the difference (on a QB tackle) was whether or not he's in the pocket. In = sack, out = TFL.
