I know this for an absolute fact. It's not a claim. Alabama started it in the 60s under Bryant. You can roll your eyes all you want to, but it was started at Alabama.

The four fingers represent the statement that "The Fourth Quarter is Ours." This gesture has been copied by many college (and high school) teams after being originated by the Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant-coached teams at the University of Alabama in the 1970s.

Oh I'm sure Bama fans have claimed it as fact and posted it all over the internet. I have a hard time believing Bear Bryant was the first person to ever hold 4 fingers in the air to signify his team was going into the 4th quarter

Here's an article about it:

LINK

quote:

TUSCUMBIA - With his right hand aloft, James A. “Jap” Patton held up four fingers.

“That’s what started the fourth-quarter thing, is we knew if the game was within six points either way, we’d win,” Patton said.

Today, it’s common for football teams to hold up four fingers at the end of the third quarter, as a way to state that the fourth quarter will belong to them. Patton said that is something Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant did long before anyone else had heard about it.

Schnelly brought it from Bama to Miami.

Miami made it famous.

The 4th quarter belongs to us!

Actually Bryant started it at Texas A&M in the 50's. An aggie supporter asked Bryant how many grand did he need to deliver a loaded Olds convertible topped w/gas to John David Crow, the day he arrived @ LSU, so he could drive to College Station. Bryant held up 4 fingers !!

Turds in the stands do it to make their pathetic, non-athletic selves feel like part of the team.

When he got to Bama, Bear started to let the officials know that they would receive $400 (a lot back then)for a job well done, when they return to their respective home towns in Alabama.

He also used 4 fingers to signal his bag boy, the amount of alcohol to pour in his cup as the Tide was rolling up another W!
