Why didn’t the doctor performing the autopsy on Secretariat weigh his heart?

I admire Secretariat and don’t want this to sound ghoulish. However, the Doc has said it was the largest heart seen on a thoroughbred. Why wouldn’t you get a weight on it to determine how large?

Wonder why? I'm just gonna guess and say Secretariat was given steroids multiple times a day

His heart was twice the size of an average horse.

He didn't need drugs.

He was pumping more Oxygen through his body and lungs than any other horse.

The Vet who did the autopsy said Secretariat's heart weight officially as 21 pounds.

Sham who battled him in those races was weighed at 19 pounds.

"Certainly, after performing autopsies on several thousand thoroughbred horses, including mares and stallions, no other horse came close to Secretariat’s heart size.

The second largest heart I found was the heart of Sham, who actually broke the Kentucky derby record, but still lost to Secretariat. Sham’s heart weighed 19 pounds. The third largest heart I found was stallion Key to the Mint, which was 16 pounds.

The majority of all others were smaller, in the range of 10 to 12 pounds."

A normal heart size for a thoroughbred is 8½ pounds.

You do realize that an enlarged heart is a side effect of steroid abuse, right? You just enhanced CapperVin's point instead of arguing against it.

Steroids were legal back then. If it was due to steroids then every horse would have had a huge heart.

He lived to be 19, which is a ripe old age for a horse. I doubt his enlarged heart was due to steroids.

Twice the size? For a 3 year old?

I don't think so.

Secretariat was a freak. Steroids work but not like that otherwise the 70s would have been full of Super Horses.

I really wish I could see a video of the vet’s face when he cut that horse open and saw a fricking 21 pound heart sitting there. I mean an eight ounce steak is a sizable chunk of meat, and that heart weighed 42x that. Must’ve been a sight to see on many different levels

Some people's obsession with Secretariat is possibly the weirdest thing in all of sports IMO.

I wouldn't give a shite if there were daily threads about the worlds best ping pong player. Atleast it would be about a human and not some animal.

Drives me crazy the try-hard dude who brings up a fricking horse any time people rank world's best athlete. Like yea Gary I'm sure there's some fricking cheetah that's fast as frick, but I don't want him on any Track and Field lists.
