Paul Lukas bought this up on Uni Watch today and it's a legit point. I think they should go back to the buttonless jerseys.

All of which leads me to a question that came up toward the end of last week’s ESPN column: Why do baseball jerseys have buttons? Wouldn’t pullovers make more sense, or at least zippers? It’s a bit of a conundrum for me, because I think buttons look snazzier (and we all enjoy seeing little snafus like the one being showcased here today), but I also believe in form following function, and I see no functional utility to a button-front jersey.

quote:

I only see buttons coming undone, balls getting lost inside jerseys, unsightly gaps in the placket, team logos that look like crap as they cross the divide, and related problems.

quote:

What about Under Armour’s solution, which is to provide two functional buttons at the top and then have non-functional ornamental buttons down the length of a faux placket? I confess that I kinda like this — you can’t even tell that the buttons are just there for show, and you avoid all the problems presented by a real button-front placket.

Same reason old farts (coaches) wear baseball uniforms.

I think it should be required in all sports.

Phil Jackson in full Lakers regalia.

Why do basketball uniforms consist of "shorts" extending to the shins and tank tops? They might as well wear long pants. Would sleeves restrict shooting?

same point could be made for the baggy pants some baseball players now

and sleeves don't restrict shooting given that some hs/college ballers wear shirts under their jerseys

Are you crazy? Those huge baggy shorts inhibit motion as you can get caught in them. If you want eas of motion, let's be honest, the old nut-huggers are the way to go. But then you look like a moron. The reason basketball has huge baggy shorts down to the ankle is because people think it looks cool. A loose short above the knee would probably be best for eas of motion/not looking like a moron.

I've never given baseball buttons a moments thought, but all of the pullover jerseys have looked cheap and stupid.

Exactly. Yeah, tradition is part of it. But not looking like a damned buffoon also plays a part. Have you seen some of the crappy unis baseball teams have worn over the years? That has nada to do with tradition.

Because Stanford's look like a fricking joke, and it would be really gay to have every team out there wearing uniforms like those.
