To be fair, women's tennis was just as big if not bigger than men's tennis before the Federer/Nadal/Djokovic era. During the late '90s, women's tennis was a lot more interesting to watch with Graf, Seles, Hingis, Williams Sisters and Davenport than boring arse Sampras and the other top male players. There's also actually been a few years when women's tennis brought in almost as much revenue as the men. It wasn't until 2011 when the revenue discrepancy really got out of hand.

quote:Because it is an outright lie. They arent bringing in close to the same amount of money. Trust me. The ATP carries the WTA. Why do you think the WTA begged to have same sight tournaments during the year? Women will point to the majors to show they have equal fans. Of course. People buy tickets to the event and go watch all the matches. The stand alone WTA events throughout the year get NOBODY. The WTA was going under until the ATP allowed them to share some tournament locations through the year.
Did you deliberately misunderstand the bolded statement? If the men and women are bringing in similar money, why shouldn't they be bringing in equal pay?
What does the fact that men are inherently stronger and faster have to do with anything? They compete separately

This is why

Right, they point to the dual-gender events as proving something despite the fact that with those events it is literally impossible to compare the amount of revenue generated.
Imagine this hypothetical: instead of playing at the same venue, each major has a separate venue for the men and women. They are essentially two different tournaments going on at the same time, and they are played right next to each other. Tickets for the men's event will not get you into the women's and vice versa.
The men's event would easily double the women's event in revenue, and probably more like quadruple. There would be some instances where a single ticket for the women's would outdraw the men's -- e.g. finals tickets to the US Open when Serena was going for the Grand Slam -- but the take for the entirety of any of the tournaments would be massively skewed in favor of the men. No reasonable person can dispute this.

In mid March I was in London, when one of the top men's players(nasal? think he was Spainish) said that women's tennis shouldn't make the same amount.
The male news caster literally looked at the female sports reporter and said "well he is going to have to apologize for saying that"
Upon hearing that I paid attention to the story, the men bring in 63% -70% of the total revenue. However that number was much smaller when the 50/50 split was announced.

This needs to be expanded on. I don't think people are grasping how this works, or they are choosing to ignore it.
The schedules for dual-gender events are deliberately designed to force fans to watch women's matches. I've been to Indian Wells 3 times, I have friends who have been to the U.S. Open, and I look at schedules of tournies all over the world on a weekly basis.
For example, at Indian Wells, a day-session ticket will generally get you 4 matches on court 1. This will almost always consist of 2 women's matches and 2 men's matches. This ticket also grants you access to all of the outer courts (thank god) to watch any match you want.
In the later stages of the tournament (when TV coverage picks up, conveniently), all of the action is on the 2 or 3 main courts. For the most part, you are stuck in your assigned seats at court 1 unless you want to fight for a nosebleed GA seat on courts 2 or 3.
There are some people who are not aware that they can roam the grounds, and still others who don't feel like leaving their expensive seats. This should give you an idea why no attendance data could ever give a clear picture of the disparity in fan interest for men and women.

Too tired to read the thread, but political correctness did this, I guess. I don't really care. In certain cases, I'd bet that Serena or Sharapova generate more interest than guys outside of the top ten. That said, the women aren't playing as long at the majors, so he equal pay is almost a crock.
I would kind of like to see a major once with women playing 3 out 5. Fans who traveled to see men would be so outraged at suffering through 6 hour women's pushfests.

Why do you rather watch men than women in skirts?
