Why is playing on the road in college basketball harder than football?

Iowa St was a 5 point favorite over #7 Kansas. Ended up being right at that. Seems like even .500 teams may be a favorite against a top 15 team if they're at home.
Is it bc it's enclosed? Volume gets trapped?

Because the SEC wants the home team to win. Pretty simple.

College basketball refs are more intimidated by home crowds than football refs.
One of the reasons I dropped my LSU basketball season tickets years ago was because I realized the referees have as much influence on the game's outcome as the players and coaches.

Mid-week and more frequent travel. Football is so consistent with one game the routine is much easier to keep up.

I could understand this if you said they want certain teams to win, but what does the SEC stand to gain from a home team instead of a visiting team winning any given game?

Think about the act of shooting a basketball. You’re trying to throw a ball into an 18 inch hoop, 10 feet in the air, sometimes from 15, 20, 25 feet away. It takes great depth perception and feel to do so. Now try doing it in an arena with unfamiliar backdrops and sight lines. It takes a minute to adjust your depth perception.
Additionally, in no sport are the fans closer to the action. That allows the crowd to be more of a factor.
Finally, basketball is a sport with more constant motion that football or baseball. Both of those sports have breaks in between plays. The action in basketball can go back and forth nonstop for minutes at a time. When the energy level in the arena rises it can help the home team play faster.

The hardest thing to do in sports is to win conference basketball games on the road

The crowd is much closer to the court than the football crowd is to the field. That makes a YUGE difference-- teams really get rattled playing in front of a hostile basketball environment.
I saw a study a while back showing college basketball teams winning 70% of the time on their home court

It’s not harder. It just happens more often, so you notice your team losses on the road more often..

Anyone can beat anyone in college basketball, for the most part, unlike college football where there is a big discrepancy between the haves and the have-nots

Fans are right right on you. Was always a challenge.

If I think of UF basketball, i see a gritty team, no matter who the coach is. The east is top heavy.

How the Arena is set up. Depth perception messes with shooters.
