Something to do with it being in a football stadium

They raise the court so the goals are lower so the players can get more slam dunks. Something they are experiminting with in the final 4 to compete with viewership aginst the womens final 4. Not sure it will work though!

For years, players have complained that it completely changes their depth perception and leads to poor shooting nights.

The coaches hate it for a variety of reasons, from heightened risk of injuries to hurting teams that rely on shooting over physicality.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to $$$.

The elevation allows for a more expansive view of the court, especially for fans in the upper levels of stadiums, making the game more visible and engaging.

Brand Recognition: The NCAA uses raised courts in tournaments like the Final Four to create a consistent and recognizable look for the event, helping casual viewers understand they are watching an NCAA championship game.

Can this only be done with a raised court?

Evidently, 27” inches

In the case of the Final Four, the reason for the elevated court, which sits 27 inches off the floor, is both aesthetic and financial. There's an obvious challenge to staging a basketball game, with its 4,700 square feet of court, on a space designed for a football field, with its 45,000 square feet.

This still makes no sense

They raise it so the slope of the temporary stands on both ends can be less, thus more seats.

I don’t think that had anything to do with it. The 2008 Final Four was played at this same venue - Alamodome. Team sideline seating was on the court, not below the court level as this year.

Likely has something to do with player benches not being in the way to obstruct players on the court.

2008 Alamodome Kansas v. Memphis State

So why isn’t every arena like that then?

The roof and backdrop have more to do with this aspect. We played a couple hs games in the alamodome. Our first shoot around was hilarious.

Ask the NCAA
Did you even watch last years NCAA Championship game ?
It also had the raised court and sideline seating below the court level

I don’t know if the set up is the same this year but 2008 the court was basically in an end zone. I’m wondering if it’s more towards the center or 50 yard line this year.

A football field is 120 yards long, and stadiums’ typical seating arrangements are designed to work for a 120-yard field. A college basketball court is 94 feet long, or about 31 yards. If the NCAA decided to just leave the stadium’s seating as it normally is, we’d be left looking at a tiny speck of a court in the middle of a massive field. There’d be lots of wasted space between the court and the first row of the stands.
