Why wouldn’t Ohtani want to speak English by now and show some respect?

I mean I thought the Japanese are supposed to be all about respect, and pride in culture, and traditions and shite. Just curious.
I mean he lives here, does his business here. Messes with chicks or dicks here.
Why not learn the language so you can relate to more branding opportunities and relate to the people and kids who are your biggest fans.
It’s just strange.
He is quickly becoming the most iconic/popular player in the World and he can’t even speak the language of the place he lives.

Well yeah for sure if he ever lives in Texas , he would definitely need to know some Spanish to get any shite done at his house.

Well ok , maybe he is in classes for it then. My fault if true.
I just haven’t ever heard him speak any English whatsoever.
Because I thought for sure if he could he would be in more American commercials and Ads and thangs.

I think if it were that easy he would. I also think that a lot of people that don't speak fluently could be embarassed to speak broken English. I imagine it can feel humiliating to not have the proper words for things or to stumble thru sentences in interviews. It's a comfort thing.

Shohei Ohtani is the best baseball player in the game and for that he is worthy of all the respect, regardless of his English proficiency.

The preceding is my humbly submitted opinion.

There was discussion about this with Ichiro as well. I remember people saying that Ichiro spoke English, and there were video clips of him speaking English, but he preferred doing interviews with an interpreter, maybe so he could express himself more easily, maybe to make sure he was not misunderstood. Here's Ichiro speaking English in a prepared speech. Maybe this was the only situation where he was somewhat comfortable speaking English in public. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZlKDrYhcUA

In my experience, most Japanese people are really difficult to understand when they are speaking English. They just have really strong accents. So I can understand the reluctance of Japanese public figures to speak publicly in English.

Whats worse is guys like Bartolo Colon or Vlad Guerrero who played in the USA over 20 years and still don't speak English.

A lot of the hispanic and asian players do speak enough english to converse in the clubhouse, but most don't do it in the media because their words can easily be taken out of context if they say something wrong.

I don't blame them.

Look at Yu Darvish, he used to speak to the media in english. Now, he uses an interpreter.

Because this guy is possibly in a position to be considered the best baseball player of all time.
Get to know your people I say.
But as others have said maybe he does not want to be misinterpreted and have to work through that process of over explaining during every interview to get his points across. Just maybe he isn’t ready yet.

How many American players playing in Japan have learned Japanese?

I guess I’m just thinking about how I would feel if was playing in another country and I was a big star. I would want to talk to people and stuff, have fun. Plus marketing products there.
Others say he speaks some maybe with just his buddies he hangs with.

1) he absolutely speaks English enough to talk in the clubhouse but doesn’t want to be misinterpreted by the media which is fair enough

2) using an interpreter makes it more difficult for the media to interview him which most players are annoyed with so it stretches out the time they have to talk with them (this is a super common tactic in the NHL especially with Russian players)

3) I can guarantee you that a Japanese players is more concerned with respecting his club/new country than basically any other player in the reverse, he’s not doing it to disrespect America at all, in fact I would say that he probably has more respect for America than Americans playing in Japan
