Will Oregon ever win the national championship?

Incredible that with all the great teams they've had over the years they've never won it all.

Too soft of a culture up there. Probably not.

Nobody cares about football out here. I don't think that is a huge deal to the players but it's an interesting trend. You go out to bars in SE or NE Portland and they have anime on instead of an Oregon football game

If this NIL shite continues they have a chance, they can buy their way into the playoffs a lot and eventually may put together a run.

It's worth noting no new program has won a national championship since Florida in 1996 btw. They were the last "first time" champion.
Virginia Tech had a shot in 1999 and Oregon had had two shots in title games in 2010 and 2014.

I think they will. They're not that far off

Depends how much Phil Knight sinks into the roster before they can get a handle on NIL.

Not that amazing. If you look at the CFP era, 4 schools have received half of the playoff berths since its inception

Not if they have to beat the #2 team in the country twice to do it.

What was crazy about the final week of 07 was Mizzou was #1 and WVU was #2, both would have been new champs so we'd have been guaranteed one if they had both made it. But both lost and we got LSU/OSU instead.

Yeah they won a few in cross country and track!

They will because of Phil Knight and Nike. They have too many resources.

Well, that makes sense, they were always a track school.

I don’t think I realized how far back the same teams go. There’s some random arKansas, Minnesota, BYU, Syracuse, Mississippi years. But it’s mostly the same 10-12 teams.

They've never been the most talented team in the playoffs when they have lost that I can recall (both times to OSU they were outtalented and outplayed)
They are finally recruiting at a consistent top 5 level. They are doing what they need to do to get the right guys there.
So I think they can win one, but you can't just chase money as an 18 year old 5* recruit. All schools are going to pay you well, so go to the place where you can get paid and develop to be an NFL player

How many teams have won a national championship after beating the same team more than once? I’m curious if anyone has kept track of that stat.
Posted on 1/2/25 at 10:36 am to Suntiger
I think it would be cool if it was more like college basketball where a ton of teams have a shot at winning the title. But the nature coach football particularly the way it’s trending has moved away from that.
