He was outstanding in that role.

Complex evil, unleashed and consumed, executed with nuanced subtlety and intense perfection.

Agreed.

Tommy Lee Jones was solid in The Fugitive but he plays the same guy in just about every movie. There was nothing truly special about that performance. That's just one of those times the Academy said it's time for this person to win an Oscar. Ralph Fiennes was absolutely top notch in Schindler's List. In fact one of the actual Schindler Jews trembled in fear when she saw Ralph Fiennes in costume because he so resembled the real Amon Goeth.

Almost as good as 99:

My Cocaine, Cider House Rules (winner)
Jude Law, Talented Mr Ripley
Haley Joel Osment, Sixth Sense
Michael Clarke Duncan, Green Mile
Tom Cruise, Magnolia

And just like 93’s win for Jones, the weakest of the five performances won. I would’ve been happy with any of the others.

Came here to post the exact same thing.

Ralph Fiennes not winning the Oscar for BSA for Schindler's List is on the same level as Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakespeare In Love.

I like Tommy Lee Jones, but he was playing the same character he always does in The Fugitive. Ralph Fiennes was so compelling and convincing in his portrayal of Amon Goth that a few of actual survivors of Plaszow who had cameos in the film started shaking in fear when they saw him on set.

Edit - damn, beat me to it.
