A new ‘potentially good’ cut of The Godfather: Part III to hit theaters in December

While there’s a strong case for why Paramount Pictures and director Francis Ford Coppola should finally embark on The Godfather: Part IV, an actual sequel will have to wait: First, we’re getting a potentially good version of The Godfather: Part III.
Paramount announced on Thursday that a new edit and restoration of Coppola’s final Godfather film, rechristened Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, will hit theaters this December, with a home video release to follow. The new version of the film “achieves director-screenwriter Coppola and screenwriter [Mario] Puzo’s original vision for the finale, which has been meticulously restored for the finest presentation of the Corleone saga’s last chapter,” Paramount said in a news release. If everyone’s roles are intact, the movie stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, Andy García, Eli Wallach, Joe Mantegna, Bridget Fonda, George Hamilton, and a young Sofia Coppola.
“Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is an acknowledgement of Mario’s and my preferred title and our original intentions for what became The Godfather: Part III,” Coppola said in a statement. “For this version of the finale, I created a new beginning and ending, and rearranged some scenes, shots, and music cues. With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II and I’m thankful to Jim Gianopulos and Paramount for allowing me to revisit it.”

Unless that cut digitally includes Tom Hagen, not interested.

Yeah, Robert Duvall's presence was definitely sorely missed in the third film.

The Godfather Part III contains two of the top 100 frick ups in cinematic history: Not giving Duvall equal billing to Pacino (I think it was a fair request) thus resulting from him not being in GF Part III and casting Sophia Coppola as Mary Corleone (although she would later become a fantastic filmmaker in her own right).

Opening scene of the movie should have been the cardinal sitting at desk across from Michael and asking for his help — similar to Bonasera opening scene in GF1. This was in the DVD release cutscenes. I have no idea why they didn’t include it. Then they could have skipped to the opening medal ceremony and it would have made more sense. And I think it would have started movie out on more of the right foot.
And yes, unfortunately no matter what, this movie never had a chance to reach its potential without Tom Hagen.

Did he cut out all of Sofia’s scenes? If not, it’s hard to see how any amount of additional footage or edits can overcome her horrifying performance.

They really didn't have much choice. Winona Ryder had originally been cast to play the role of Mary but she pulled out literally the night before she was supposed to start filming her scenes. Sofia Coppola, who had no professional acting experience before The Godfather Part III, was cast because she was visiting the set while on Christmas break.

When I saw GFIII in the theater during its original run, the crowd cheered when Sofia was killed.

I mean, it was never a bad film, it just wasn't great like the first two.
If Coppola thinks he can improve the flow of the narrative, fine. But as already mentioned, I can't imagine any of it can make up for Duvall's absence or Sofia's acting.

In 10 years we'll get a version with Duvall digitally inserted and George Hamilton removed.

This sounds like a money grab and a little superficial redecorating of a fundamentally flawed movie.
Pass.
Pass.

Yep. People forget that, even though it wasn't anywhere near as good as its two predecessors, it was still one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1990. Sofia Coppola was the biggest complaint about the film at the time of its release - and rightfully so. But it still managed to snag 7 Academy Award nominations (including nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor - Andy Garcia). For comparison, Goodfellas (which was released in the same year) got 6 Academy Award nominations.

The Oscars also gave the nod to Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan...So...

Shakespeare in Love also happens to be a really good movie, too.

As a Godfather fan, this intrigued me. I read that Ryder had just done three films and went to Rome, got very sick, and was told to go home. Coppola considered Julia Roberts (was on another project) and Madonna (the role was for an 18 year old and she was near 30). He settled on his daughter, who really had no acting experience. In many circles, the decision has haunted him ever since. You cannot tell me that if he'd wanted, he would have had hundreds of qualified actresses begging for that part. Francis blew it, and likely cost Sofia any chance of being taken seriously as an actress again, and there is no doubt the movie's reputation suffered because of it. I like the movie, but she was not good.

I wonder if people saw Godfather III without seeing the previous two and therefore thought it was a good movie?
Kinda like kids who never saw the OT Star Wars and therefore thought Phantom Menace was badass.

I doubt that. Most people don't go in blind to the concluding chapter of a movie trilogy.

I had seen OT before I watched Phantom Menace and thought the latter was badass. I had just turned 12 when Episode I was released and so that movie was directly marketed at my demographic. I loved it until I was old enough to realize it had serious flaws. That having been said, I think the sequel trilogy gave me a greater appreciation for George Lucas.
