A lot of actors served during WW2. Durning was part of the first wave at D-Day, and was the only member of his unit to survive. This is from Memorial Day, 2004, just before the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

His right leg was hit with machine gun bullets and was shot in the chest, which ended his military career.

As an actor he must have been a nightmare for the wardrobe department. How do you tailor a pair of pants to hold that massive pair of balls he had?

I've always loved Durning the actor. Played parts in a bunch of movies I love. Never knew this before. A true hero!!!

Loved him as an actor, but I never realized he was part of WWII and did so much for his military. That is a true American hero and a good arse man.

I have to say... he might have had the best ever song about modern politics.

"What the hell did he say?" "Same as usual, nothing."
He could hit for the cycle in Hollywood. Comedy, drama, musicals... he had it all in his bag. All of that and an honest to God American hero.
