Actor salaries (Will Smith)

I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I was reading Will Smith's page on Wikipedia just now, and it has his movies listed, along with his salaries from them. Suffice to say that Will has done...um...pretty well for himself, especially if these figures are true.
Here are a few of his salaries for movies:
Bad Boys (his first "big" payday): 2 million
ID4: 5 million
MIB: 5 million
Enemy of the State: 14 million
Wild Wild West: 7 million
Bagger Vance: 10 million
Ali: 20 million
Very nice paydays, for sure. But here's where it gets interesting...
MIB2: 20 million + 10% of gross
Bad Boys 2: 20 million + 20% of gross
I, Robot: 28 million
Shark Tale: 15 million
Hitch: 20 million
Pursuit of Happyness: 10 million + 20% of gross
I Am Legend: 25 million
Hancock: 20 million + 20% of gross
Now, here are the box office numbers, and Will Smith's adjusted salaries for the four movies where he had gross figures tied into his salary (rounded numbers):
MIB2: 442 million....Smith's salary: 64.3 million
Bad Boys 2: 273 million....Smith's salary: 74.6 million
Pursuit of Happyness: 307 million......Smith's salary: 71.4 million
Hancock: 624 million....Smith's fricking salary: 144.8 million
Anybody have any idea if that shite is anywhere NEAR accurate? Because if so, Will Smith made over $355 million just on those four movies above where his salary was tied into the movie's gross. Three hundred and fifty-five MILLION dollars. For 4 movies. I love Will Smith, I don't want to hate on anyone, and I'm all for capitalism in America..but I don't think anybody is worth 155 million dollars for doing just about anything. Unless Hancock was a real person, and he was paid for protecting the country or some shite like that.
Now, to be fair, those movies made over $1.6 billion at the box office (not to mention rentals, DVD sales, merchandise, etc.). But still...
I don't know exactly how it works, but I'd imagine it's similar to professional athletes, who only get paid during their respective seasons, I believe. So that's some fat fricking cheese for someone who's only working on the movie for a year at most (including marketing and promoting for it). Well done, Mr. Smiff.

The accountants probably use different numbers to calculate the gross, but yeah. Points are the way to go, huh?
Isn't there some story about how much Donald Sutherland has made off of Animal House because he got paid in points off the gross?

I don't know if the negotiations with shite like that means US gross or Worldwide gross, but if all it says is "gross" then I'd have to assume it means total gross for the movie, which would obviously include worldwide numbers.

Doesn't look like it. This article says that he declined the points payment, and lost out on 2 million. Also, this is from the Wiki page for Animal House:
quote:
Landis asked Sutherland, one of the biggest stars of the 1970s, to be in the film. For two days' work, Sutherland initially declined $35,000. Universal then offered him $35,000 and 15% of the film's gross, assuming that the movie would be quickly forgotten. Sutherland wanted guaranteed money and settled for $50,000; although this made him the highest-paid member of the cast (other than Neidemeyer's horse[2]), the decision cost Sutherland what Landis estimates as "at least $20 million."

Son of the bitch that's a lot of money. I hope he remembers the little people like DJ Jazzy Jeff. Without Jazz he's pumping gas in Philly.

I remember something about Jack Nicholson taking a salary cut on Batman for a percentage of the Worldwide gross and merchandise sales. Needless to say, he made a shitload of money.

What I wonder about is that surely the movie studios had access to Smith's salaries for previous films...so when they saw that he was basically a guaranteed blockbuster-maker, why the hell would they agree to pay him 1/5 of what the movie made in theaters? Just seems like a not-so-smart idea on their part.
Especially the people who did Hancock...they already saw him making 64, 74, and 71 million bucks for the three previous movies that he had his salary tied into gross numbers.
I guess they have some sort of formula that calculates how much ADDITIONAL money they expect to make just by having Will Smith in their movie, and they OK the salary because in the long run, they will make more money. Who knows....those numbers are just insane though.

But it's easy to see why he is cast and paid so much. After ID4 and MIB... the dude was guaranteeed money.
I mean without Will Smith, how good does Pursuit of Happiness and Hancock do. Both extremely average movies, but because of Smith's cult following with a certain demographic, they made probably 500 million more than they would have with someone like Forrest Whitacker, Don Cheadle at the lead. It makes sense to fork out the extra money if your return is 10x greater.

Will Smith has been a popular MF since his Fresh Prince days, therin lies the success of his movie crossover success, he is a hit with the hip hop generation of today, that's why he makes so much damn money for goofy movies!
just smart thinking on his part to take the percentage deals later on!

Will Smith is probably the #1 international box-office draw.
Even that piece of shite Seven Pounds made close to $170M worldwide.

Wiki says he made $6 million salary, and then more due to the box office total. I found something that said it was $60 million in total. Wiki says it was around $50 million.

I know this and I am a big fan of Smith - but Hancock was a big pile of crap.

No, Hancock made $607 million in theaters. That number has nothing to do with DVD sales.

No doubt:
quote:
In fact, he is the only actor in history to have eight consecutive films gross over $100 million in the domestic box office as well as being the only actor to have eight consecutive films in which he starred open at the #1 spot in the domestic box office tally.[3]
Fourteen of the 19 fiction films he has acted in have accumulated a worldwide grosses of over $100 million, and 4 of them took in over $500 million in global box office receipts.
