Ben Affleck's new film with Matt Damon, 'Air,' details the partnership between Michael Jordan and Nike.

Amazon has sky-high hopes for “Air,” which stars Damon as Vaccaro, Affleck as Nike founder Phil Knight and Viola Davis as Jordan’s mother, Deloris. Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans and Chris Tucker round out the cast. To help generate buzz for the film, Amazon plunked down more than $7 million for a Super Bowl ad for “Air.”

They look old. But I don't know the ages of the characters at that point in time.

Chris Tucker is playing young Jordan

In 2019, Johnson spoke to Yahoo! Finance about his run-in with Knight. “I was 19 years old, just won that national championship after beating Larry Bird and I was about to sign a shoe deal," Johnson said. "Converse came in and everyone at that time was wearing Converse because of Dr. J. So Converse came in and offered me some money.
And then this guy named Phil Knight came in, and Nike was only like one or two years old. He said he doesn’t have a lot of money but will offer me stock. I was 19, didn’t know a lot. And, so the rest is history."
Magic signed with Converse, so did Bird (for a bigger amount) and ergo their famous commercial.
People forget how big Converse was and Nike was nothing. They sold track shoes. And gambled on Jordan back when shoe deals were for established stars.
This trailer feels like another Ford vs. Ferrari.

And then years later, Shaq was being pursued by everyone. And Nike was the premier brand and the logical choice for Shaq to choose and become the heir apparent to the Jumpman brand.
His agent had somewhat of a verbal agreement with Nike that would have made Shaq the richest active athlete by miles.
Shaq shows up to Nike headquarters to finalize the deal to become the new face of the Jumpman brand and he walks into the board room wearing a pair of brand-new Reeboks and Reebok wind suit. He tells Nike, "I don't like any of your brick shoes, they aren't comfortable. I want you to make my shoes feel this comfortable."
Nike execs were PISSED and the meeting that was scheduled to last a few hours lasted merely minutes. Supposedly, even Shaq's agent was surprised (this fact has never been confirmed and often debated within the industry).
Shaq and Reebok announced their huge deal 2 days later and it shocked the athletic apparel industry.
The point of that long, tangential story -- I can see a fantastic and entertaining movie about Shaq's career as both a player and a businessman. He clearly is a smart man and surrounds himself with exceptionally smart people.

Damn ... that looks good. First film with the new Affleck/Damon production company. And some of the producers from Ford Vs Ferrari.

my son and his best friend just wrapped up their jr high tournament this weekend.
midway through the season the two of them decided to go retro and rocked these.

my son said the iversons were better than any of the durants, lbj, kyrie's or giannis ones he tried on.

Looks solid...but while it was obviously a gamble doing what they did, it's some revisionism to act like Michael Jordan wasn't already a household name before he stepped foot onto an NBA court at least in terms of basketball fans.
He sank the game winner as a freshman in the 1982 NCAA Finals against Georgetown for arguably the highest profile college team.
By the summer of 1984 he'd already been a 2X consensus All-American, 2X NCAA Player of the Year, and had lead the 1984 Olympic Team in LA to a Gold Medal on a team that had THRASHED NBA legends leading up to it. Those Olympics were gigantic, since the US has skipped the previous one in 1980 in Moscow and these were being hosted in LA and everyone watched a ton of it.
Like I said, huge gamble and all but this wasn't some unknown nobody.

Someone figured out what the dream plot and cast of the 40 year old male is.

They better fricking case Michael B Jordan as Jordan

quote:Not saying he was unknown, but college basketball and the NBA were small potatoes in 1982 (compared to the NFL and MLB). Most of the NBA games on TV were tape-delayed and shown after the 10p and 11p news.

So a movie centered around Jordan isn’t gonna have Jordan in it?

Magic also wanted the cash up front instead of the stock that Jordan got.
Likely, they're both billionaires by now (as is Shaq) but Jordan is the richer billionaire over Magic. (Have not googled it...)
Movie looks lame. Ben looks tired these days. But will watch.
