It’s one of those movies like Jaws or A Few Good Men(for me—you all have your own) that no matter where I catch it, I have to finish all,the way through.

Makes me wonder about John Landis, though. What happened to him? Animal House, Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London, Trading Places, Thriller, Three Amigos, Spies Like Us, Coming to America, etc...he killed the 80s. Then he’s directing Beverly Hills Cop 3, Oscar with Sly Stallone, and a bunch of other crap.

Also, Jenny Agutter is fine as frick. And she gets (full-frontal) naked a few years earlier in Walkabout. I’m on my phone and can’t—or am too lazy to post pics—but if I’m being totally honest, this may actually be a Jenny Agutter thread cleverly disguised as an An American Werewolf in London/John Landis, where’d he go thread. I make no apologies.

Great line and I was just struck with deja vu. I think you referenced the same line in a similar thread I posted a few year ago.

The makeup is still some of the best ever. Beats the hell out of any cgi today.

I'm not saying the film is a masterpiece. I'm saying that if you watch it for what it was, it's an entertaining little movie.

Well, really not much of anything the past 20 years.

AAWIL and The Howling were groundbreaking films with regard to the potential of practical, in camera special effects of this sort. Along with 2001, Blade Runner and Silent Running, those are my Top 5 in that category.

AAWIL, The Howling, and Wolfen, shocking similar films were all released in 1981.

I’ve got no problem with him making that movie. I was looking forward to that movie. I loved parts 1 and 2. But it went totally against the tone of the 1st 2, which were legit crime/detective films. 3 was so over the top, cheesey, it reminded me of a Kevin Smith post Chasing Amy/Dogma movie. Like Clerks 2 or Jay and Silent Bob Sell Their Souls to the Devil. However, in fairness to Landis, this might have been around the time that Eddie Murphy sold his soul to the devil and quit caring about being one of the greatest, most innovative, raw, and influential performers in history and became Dr. fricking Doolittle.

Didn’t watch it. Won’t watch. Did Stallome have an agent between Stop or My Mom will Shoot and Cliffhanger? Cause....woof.

100% it still does. Great flick. Landis was money back then, quite a few classics as OP mentioned.

I find that a ton of 80s movies have better effects than much of the overused CGI today. I understand it’s use, but I feel like some movies rely TOO heavily on it and would do well to use some more practical effects, makeup, etc. This has been the case for at least 15-20 years now

The bathroom scene in the middle of the night is quite unnerving...

And Jack was just creepy as hell...

The makeup was great and terrifying...

And yes, Jenny was fine...

I think my favorite why not to cgi is The Thing prequel vs Harbinger Down.

shite looked cartoons on release for Thing prequel.

Harbinger Down fits right in with the original.
