"And I hate the f*cking Eagles, man" - The Big Lebowski

This is a thread where we talk about The Eagles through the lens of The Big Lebowski, because you have to have a movie as a diving board to discuss music here.

Does anyone actually "hate" them or strongly dislike them? Count me as part of the monoculture who thinks they're great
quote:
One of the most influential rock critics of the last couple of decades doesn’t write for Rolling Stone, Spin, or Pitchfork; he’s not a writer at all, actually, or even a real person. You could call this figure the man for his time and place. Even if he’s a lazy man—and this person is most certainly that, quite possibly the laziest in Los Angle-less County, which would place him high in the running for laziest worldwide—sometimes there’s a man, sometimes there’s a man …
I’m talking about The Dude here. Specifically, I’m talking about The Dude hating the fricking Eagles.
Like all great surveyors of culture, The Dude didn’t tell people what to think when he famously declared his dislike for L.A.’s biggest country-rock band in the back of that guy’s cab in The Big Lebowski; he merely articulated what they were already feeling. He could’ve said, “I hate fricking James Taylor,” or “I hate the fricking Doobie Brothers” and been equally justified. But he wouldn’t seem nearly as right.
quote:
I’ve spent most of my life as a music fan believing that the Eagles suck. But I never realized why I thought they sucked, or that hating the Eagles is only a few millimeters removed from loving the Eagles. (Which makes hating them a defense mechanism, like carrying a can of mace or blaming your DVR for “mistakenly” erasing all those episodes of Treme.) If you hate the Eagles, you probably hate them for at least one of the following four reasons. And there’s somebody out there who probably loves them for the exact same reasons. With the Eagles, “success” and “sucking” go hand in hand. If you’re not careful, you can forget which side you’re on.

close, but not an Eagles song
/presses ominous red button, the smoke monster's seat gives way and is sent through a misleadingly fun, tubular ride to a human incinerator

I don't hate the Eagles. My Step-father played them non-stop on road trips. So, I grew fond of them and have a few favorites..
I think the Eagles only problem is that a ton of their songs treaded real close to country. Which turned off alot of fans.

They definitely have good songs. Their song "Take It to the Limit" is forever burned in my memory because my business calculus teacher would play that song when we learned about limits

And as far as "great" I would more put them in "damn good" category...
right next to Clint Black.

I'm actually with The Dude on this one.

They are one of the blandest bands ever. It's sort of like hating TGI Fridays. Sure, its not a good restaraunt, but its not awful. Just oppressively bland. Ginning up hatred for a band as mediocre as the Eagles just seems like a waste of time.
Now hating the Steve Miller Band? Sign me up!
I do think the Eagles' ticket prices are obscene, though. But if that's what nostalgia is worth to you, then that's what's you pay.
And Joe Walsh's solo career is pretty great.

Other than Seven Bridges Road, I would be OK if I never heard another Eagles tune. I do not dislike them or think they are without talent, but feel like I've heard them so much growing up I think I'm good for life.

I got pretty burned out on the Eagles in high school. The B side of the Hotel California album is still a favorite though.

I like The Eagles, but I was raised on them

there is nothing not amazing about the guitar work in the version of this song

I'm a huge Lebowski fan...obviously. I do not like the Eagles at all really. Glen Fry is a run of the mill singer. Joe Walsh is a good guitarist but the band is so soft.
Eagles have always been a wussy mellowed out California/desert type rockers that I have never been in to. I have no problem with people being Eagles fans.
"Hotel California's" main problem is the the fact it is over played. "Lyin' Eyes", "peaceful easy feeling" and "take it to the limit" just put me to sleep.

I'd like them a lot more if they'd tell me what Hotel California is about
