No Country For Old Men Explained: The Rule of Fire

Interesting theory I came across in this video. Sorry if this has been discussed, I’ve never heard this theory before.

His reasoning is that Chigurh is the sheriff’s explanation for everything that’s happening, but he’s not a real person. That’s why he seems so robotic and detached from humanity, and why he always has the right tool for the job and always wins. A big tell is the end when the sheriff goes back to the motel shootout scene. We see Chigurh on the other side of the door, but when the sheriff opens the door there’s no one there.

I always thought Chigurh was just in a different room, but the symbolism is that there isn’t actually a boogy man on the other side of the door and the sheriff can’t save the day. The world is just a cruel place and it’s not because of this one guy that you can kill and make everything go back to normal.

This guy also makes a cool connection that I never noticed. At the end when Sheriff Bell is telling the story about his dad carrying fire in the dark, that directly connects to Cormac McCarthy’s book The Road. In that book, anytime the son asks the dad what they’re doing, he says “we’re carrying the fire.”

The cartel and the feds working with them, if they got killed at all. We’re just seeing the sheriff’s narration of what’s going on, and how he’s trying to explain it and come to grips with the new world around him.

Maybe that explains the transponder question I always had. What was the range of that thing, especially in the early 80's? Texas is a big place yet he always knew where to go.

Then the one on one scene with Woody makes no sense.

I love NCFOM. Will watch it anytime its on and I have read the book a few times. I love it for its simplicity, which is the opposite of Anton not being real. He was real; he was the hit man for some nasty people on both sides of the drug game. No need to add or subtract from him.

The better “gotcha” is that the movie is about Sheriff Bell, not Moss.

It would also explain how Chigurh was able to walk right into a federal building downtown and kill a guy and nothing happens to him.

Maybe that’s woody having a conversation with himself, trying to come to grips with what he has done before taking his life. Either way this theory is wrong and stupid.

Well and the interaction with the boys at the end with the bicycle. The theory seems a little bit too chunky. I like the thought that he’s a personification of death.

Always appreciate a reason to talk about this movie again though.

These are all just scenes in Bell’s imagination. He never actually sees or interacts with Chigurh.

So we had a completely pointless scene with Anton where he decides to let the guy working the register live?

Nah. This theory is dumb Cracked circa 2015 bullshite.

Right, he had a giant silencer on his shotgun that he open-carried into an office building downtown and nothing happened.

There were less Karens in the world and work force in the 80s.

None of the scenes are pointless, we’re seeing Bell’s idea of Chigurh.

Bruh you went from “I came across this theory online” to rewriting the damn screenplay all in this thread. The theory sucks by the way.

Noted. I like the theory and it would explain how Chigurh is superhuman.

He’s not though. His damn bone was sticking out of his skin after that car hit him. And Llewellyn has him dead to rights a few times in their shootout in the street, he just couldn’t nail him.

What makes Anton so great is that he’s very real and will kill you while trying not to get blood on his shoes.

And he can walk into a pharmacy and make a car bomb in five minutes.
