This could either go horribly wrong or be a classic. I don't think there's any middle ground for this IP. I think they have to fully embrace the weird and (literally) insane storyline.

Looks like Sam Keith is one of the producers -- which is a good sign.

Crystal Moselle seems an odd choice to write/direct, but we'll see I guess.

We're still a ways away so directors and writers and actors can change.

But this is probably one of my favorites properties from my teenage years. I loved the comic. I loved the animated series on MTV.

quote:

First hitting shelves in 1993, the Image Comics series ran for 35 issues before being collected in trade paperback by DC Comics' Wildstorm imprint.

MTV would later commission a 13-episode animated series, which, while critically-acclaimed, was way too dark and bizarre for mainstream audiences.

The show has since done on to achieve cult status and was given a long-awaited DVD release a few years ago.

I watched the Maxx on Liquid Television back in college. Super deep for a "cartoon" and I really liked it.

It was dark and thought provoking.

I hope they do it justice. I fear they won't.

All the years run together, but I have fond memories of Aeon Flux, Sifl and Olly and the Maxx.

is the best case scenario a weird dark movie that absolutely won’t be a success

See, this wouldn't have been a problem 25 years ago. If it was good but not a theatrical success it would have made money through physical media. Now, that's not an option. So, studios are going to pivot to profit. We get more generic, mass market tentpoles and less cool weird shite. Does a Reservior Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers even happen today? And yes, those are all Tarantino properties. But Tarantino doesn't get his break in current day Hollywood.

I want the avante garde and I want the tentpoles. I want the popcorn and the weird.

But studios are losing money -- not because they wrote "woke" shite. They just wrote bad movies. And now they will pivot to formulaic schlock...and we won't get cool, interesting stuff for a decade or so -- until the coffers are full again.
