I was not alive to watch the show when it aired on tv. But I do love will Ferrell and Danny McBride. I feel like this movie did not get well received when it came out but my brother and I loved it. It was great jokes and is a classic performance for both its male leads.

Does this just hit my funny bone or did this movie not get the full praise it deserved?

It's a Will Ferrell, Danny McBride movie, with dinosaurs.

It hits its mark.

I went into it with really low expectations and really enjoyed it.

Even though I was a kid in the 70s and the original series was on every Saturday morning, I always thought that it looked super cheesy and never really got into it. Maybe not having a nostalgic connection to the original show helps.

My favorite part of the movie is the Matt Lauer interview at the end.

Same reason many of the people who were fans of the Starsky and Hutch or Dukes of Hazzard tv series did not like the Stiller/Wilson and Knoxville/Stifler movies.

Most people who were alive when it originally aired and watched the show wanted something more like that and instead they got a Will Ferrell comedy that bordered on being a parody of the show in an extended SNL skit more than a big budget remake.

It doesn't really help the movie's case that Ferrell essentially plays the exact same character as he did in movies like Talladega Nights, Blades of Glory, and Semi-Pro (and to a lesser degree Elf, Kicking and Screaming, and Step Brothers) where he's acts somewhat clueless w/social cues and simple common sense issues even though he's actually really good at XYZ and under it all has a heart of gold.

Add in a couple of comments like "Sweet Jiminy Christmas that smarts!" or "By Odin's Beard!" following a slapstick moment and you're already halfway to making the typical Ferrell movie circa 2005-2020.

All that said, I do like the movie. But I'm also biased as I like most Will Ferrell movies and don't mind that when he is in comedy mode he's become a bit of a one trick pony as I generally enjoy the one trick.

Also, while I fully get while people might not like the direction they went w/the scripts or the actors used, I'll defend the Dukes of Hazzard and Starsky and Hutch movies as worth watching b/c they actually used real cars instead of CG for the driving stunts. It really makes a big difference when you know that car legitimately just got thrashed by a stunt driver.

Land Of The Lost was around the point when Ferrell was oversaturated and audiences started getting tired of his shtick.

His run from 2003 to 2008 was incredible, with Old School, Elf, Anchorman, Kicking And Screaming, Talladega Nights, Blades Of Glory, Semi-Pro, and Step Brothers.

After LotL he started doing fewer movies and took more supporting actor and voice acting parts.

I used to watch the original religiously on Saturday mornings and never minded the movie "remake." It was a silly Saturday morning "cartoon" thing. No need for solemnity and drama. Same applies to HR Pufnstuf although a serious version of that would be cool. It was darker with that witch running around.

Same for me… almost.

The sleestacks scared the bejeebus out of me.

But the show had such a low production value, that the scenes with the Sleestacks confused me. They would literally appear right there behind the cave door in numbers but were so slow and awkward that they could never catch the humans (or rarely), even the little girl.

Danny McBride and Will Ferrell could be the two funniest people on the planet and I remember how excited I was to see this movie (or any movie, really) starring them together. I was so overwhelmingly disappointed. It was like they were trying deliberately to create cinema history, and not in a good way. It's noteworthy awful. The only redeeming part of this movie is watching Anna Friel walk around in those tiny shorts and wife beater.
