IMO Blazing Saddles does not hold up.

Wow. Last week I watched it for the first time in quite a while. Incredibly funny. Should be required viewing in all high schools and colleges.

That imitation dance Mel Brooks did to hustle coins like that young Black kid was doing was funny as hell. Brooks just nailed a rich dude that was funny homeless. The dude thinking he was J Paul Getty was awesome. I wish I could ask one of the Coen Brothers if they asked Mel Brooks before they shot the spilled cremated ashes scene in “Lebowski”.

I enjoyed it in high school (10+ yrs ago) but I rewatched it a couple months back and it just fell flat for me.

Starting at the age of 10, my late hippie sister-in-law took me to a slew of Mel Brooks and Woody Allen films. God bless her.

Mel Brooks is my favorite.

If it's for a girl I would suggest Young Frankenstein and Robin Hood Men in Tights.

My favorite movie of his may very well be High Anxiety though. I highly recommend this one.

To Be or Not to Be is actually a remake of a Jack Benny movie. Virtually a carbon copy. I still enjoy the hell out of it though.

I think Blazing Saddles may be the best, but my personal favorite is Young Frankenstein.

History of the World Part 1
I recall that 'serious' movie critics absolutely savaged this film when it came out.

I tend to like it because Mel actually starred in it, unlike most of his other major works like Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein and The Producers. His performance gave it an improvisational feel as it always seemed like he was making a lot of it up on the set (that's a compliment, BTW).

That said, the only one of his films I own on DVD is YF. The great homage to the original Universal classics, the crisp black & white cinematography, the music, and a young Terri Garr always bring me back for more.

The top 3 must watches, though:

Blazing Saddles

Young Frankenstein

History of the World Pt.1
...

In that order.

This.

For sure Blazing Saddles. But it is pretty controversial in today’s environment. May want to start with Men In Tights, which is his most accessible.

ETA: Blazing Saddles is my favorite comedy of all time.

Chick hasn’t ever seen a Mel brooks movie.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights is your best bet. It's his most easily accessible movie, and chicks dig young Cary Elwes.

Young Frankenstein is probably #2.

Blazing Saddles, with no introduction, is playing with fire. In 2020, I put zero faith in the average person understanding the nuances of a movie like that, doubly so in the context of race relations from 50 years ago. Do you want to spend an hour saying "No, no, no - they were racist and stupid, that's the point!" and end up with blue balls?

Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs or RH:MiT are probably your best bet. Tell her chappelle is in RH and she will want to watch it.

"Required viewing in all high schools & colleges" ?In today's world? The left has already "burned " Tom Sawyer. They'd lose it with Blazing Saddles.

I randomly dropped the " Hey, where the white women at ? " line to a group of younger guys at work and they were confused and flabbergasted. LOL!! Not a one of them got the reference.

Not up for 'best', but I just wanted to put SILENT MOVIE out there.
