Just rewatched this movie for the first time since it came out. I remember the marketing made it seem like Saw or Hostel mixed with killer insects. The movie is nothing like the marketing suggests and was panned by audiences.
Being a fan of William Friedkin and his films I decided to revisit this one as I didn’t really remember much about it. HOLY frick. What an intense movie. I don’t think the word intense does it any justice.
Michael Shannon & Ashley Judd are on fire here. I have never seen a more accurate depiction of mental illness on film. Harry Connick Jr. probably gives his best acting performance in this too.
As far as what really happens in this movie….I have no idea. I thought I had it figured out but in MCU fashion there is a post credit scene that makes me go “WTF?!” and throws everything for a loop.

There is? I don’t think I’ve ever stuck around long enough to see it.
It is certainly a crazy movie. Don’t remember liking it much back then, and haven’t really given it much of a chance lately.
Mental illness and meth.

Slight spoilers:
Yeah…the post credit scene shows the hotel room still intact with the doctors body still laying on the ground and no sign of fire damage. I tried to see other peoples interpretations of what the hell actually happened but I think the movie is too obscure still.
With that being said the movie is not an easy watch at all. Despite peoples disappointment over it not being like Saw or Hostel (like advertised) I think Bug is way more fricked up and unrelenting to the audience ironically enough.

I just don't think he does "non" intense. I like his work, but I think he is probably legitimately crazy (like Randy Quaid, Gary Busey, Dennis Hopper, etc.)

I don’t remember him being all that intense in “Groundhog Day,” but he was stoked to get those WrestleMania tickets.
His character was really unlikable in “Premium Rush,” though.

In retrospect, I don't think a ton of acting was going on for Ashley Judd.

I watch it as a comedy. It's pretty funny. I always wondered if she thought it would be her Monster (2003).

That’s a great point. I do believe that Friedkin & Shannon knew exactly what type of movie they were making.
