Civil War movies that are appropriate to show in class (6th-8th grades)

What movies about the civil war, that illustrate the historical context of the war, are appropriate for showing in a junior high classroom? Looking for something that shows how the war started and how it impacted the nation.
What do y’all recommend?
TIA

There aren't that many. Glory is a little too mature for that age group. I'd go with Gettysburg or Gods and Generals (the blu ray extended editions).
Gettysburg is the better of those two latter films but Gods and Generals shows the beginning of the conflict. You're not going to find that perfect movie. Your best best is looking into a miniseries like North and South (the one starring Patrick Swayze) if you're looking for full, historical context.

Gettysburgh
Gone With the Wind
+1 on North and South...very good series.
The best Civil War-era films are very long, so expect to show the film for like an entire week

Pepsi released an edited version of Glory that took out the gore and some language. We watched it in high school for our American History class. Might be worth checking

probably be best to pick some segments from the PBS series for the start of the war ... course, you'll run into trouble from both sides/arguments about the start of the war ... those are still shots with narration, but you can build a pretty good lesson around a photograph or a letter ... i showed a few segments (john brown/bloody kansas) in a world history class during a unit on historical protests ... think there's a film out there about bloody kansas, but i have not seen it ... wouldn't show gettysburg or gods/generals ... bit of hero worship there (in g/g) and they are very long ... hard to get a 7th grader to 'get into' those personalities ... far as the impact of the war, that could be anything ... they could handle Lincoln and probably stay with it a bit, but i'm sure there will be posters a plenty to point out its flaws ...

Captain America was historically accurate.

This is for my wife’s class. She is trying to decide between the following 3: Glory, Gettysburg, and The Red Badge is Courage. She wants it to be age appropriate, so I told her I’d help look for more options. I appreciate the responses. I’ll forward the information in this thread to her.

There was a 1982 miniseries called “The Blue and the Gray,” which might work for the class. It was on broadcast TV, so that plays well with the younger classroom audience.
It’s a little more events-oriented than “North and South,” which tells the story of two families on opposite sides of the war. “North and South” is legit entertainment, but it’s also a soap opera. You have to wade through infidelity and other family business in that one.
Look into The Blue and the Gray. It shouldn’t be too “adult” for the audience, if I remember right. It’s been a long time, though.

Thanks! I’ll let her know about that one as well.

Classes are only 40 minutes...it would take a week to show that movie and it would be like Kindergarten nap time.
They've been showing Glory for years in schools. It checks all the boxes, isn't too long and isn't too mature.

It doesn't show how the war starts, which was one of the stipulations in the OP. Glory is probably the single best movie about the conflict but it doesn't really show the origins of the conflict.

Gettysburg is the way to go. My degree is in Civil War history and unless you’re showing a documentary, Gettysburg is interesting and historically accurate.

Really?? Cause I remember watching Glory in middle school.
It is middle school kids....unless they are some overly sheltered home schooled freaks...they have seen worse.
