Clark Griswold's Christmas Bonus: how much was he expecting?

Gris was planning to build a pool and fly his relatives out with the leftover dollars. I realize he is a bit of a dumbass, but he must have been expecting to get a good bit of coin on that bonus with those grand plans.

It was 1989. He wasn't going to pay cash for the whole pool. I would guess 15k

15k was my estimate as well. Clark seemed like one of those cats that turned off his dumbass switch once he was in the office. He was most likely a valuable employee to Frank Shirley.

Not sure how much but I think we can assume it was at least enough to cover the $7500 down payment of the pool. It also seems like it may have been performance based considering all the mentions of the cereal lacquer he developed and how sure he was that he was getting the bonus.

I thought he was just trying to cover what he put down ($7,500) with his bonus check. Not paying for the whole thing.

Had to be more than that because he was carrying on like he was going to be in some seriously deep shite if that bonus didn't come through.
I'm guessing 20K.

Would explain why someone with the money to afford that house in the suburbs of Chicago didn't have ~$7500 (or even the full ~$15k if this thread's estimate is correct) to cover the pool costs if his bonus didn't come through.
Using the government's inflation calculator:
$7500 is 20% of $37500, which is ~$87,000 in today's dollars.

Speaking of family, how long was his family at his house? It seemed like the whole month of December. What a pain

why was it so urgent? It's not like the contractor was going to break ground on during the middle of winter.

They arrived on 15th if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, only a man secure enough with his position and value to the company would speak like that to high level corporate types.

No way he is making that as a bonus in the the 80s.
With inflation, that's 30 grand today.
Clarke looked like he had s solid job, nice house...but not the type of job or house where you get a 30 grand bonus...that's insane. That would be like a third of his yearly salary back then.
He wasn't on Wall Street in 1989.
$7,500 = $15,000 today...so I doubt his bonus covered the down payment.
Probably his bonus was most likely $10,000 max...so...$5,000 back then...that's what I always thought $5,000 grand in 1989.

Yeah - the narration is tracked by the 12 days of Christmas windows being opened - so, 10 days to 2 weeks, again, IIRC.

I always figured it would've been around $10-15K. But I guess that depends on if he was paying for it outright or just a deposit. But not to mention he said he was planning on flying everyone back to dedicate the pool. So even though he says "if there's enough left over," clearly he was thinking there should/may be or else he wouldn't have said anything. So add in plane tickets for 10-15 people.
ETA: I can't swim, Clark.

Plane tickets in the midwest in the late 80s may have been cheaper as well. Also, I'm gonna go ahead and say that he wouldn't have flown Eddie and his family out for it, and he was more than likely counting on a few elders to have passed away as well.

I work with people that get 30k in bonuses throughout the year and you would never think it.

Who do you guys think had more money? The Griswold's or the McAllister's?
both lived in baller Chicago neighborhoods.
And both seemed to be made of money.
