Deconstructing Christmas Vacation

Why did the tree catch on fire? Snot drank all of the water and it dried out (seems like it still would have burned way slower even it was bone dry)? Did the full shitter and gas from the storm drain play a role? If so why did the gas only affect the tree and not the rest of the house?
Nothing makes sense to explain the "whoosh" and split second incineration of the Grizwald family Christmas tree.

What doesn't make sense is the fact that you can complain about small details in the movie yet can't spell Griswold correctly.

Plus the tree was cut down just a few days earlier. Even if he had never put it in water it would never have caught fire while still alive.
However, a totally dead, dried out Christmas tree really does burn insanely fast. Although it would have been a major conflagration that would have burned the house down.
Why did dust come billowing out of the dried out husk of the Turkey even though it looked perfectly cooked?

Why were Rusty and Audrey sleeping together in her bed while the grandparents slept in Rusty's Bunk beds?
Wouldn't it have made more sense for Audrey to sleep on the bottom bunk and have the grandparents sleep in her bed?

quote:that's why I'm thinking sewer gas was part of it. Right before it catches Clark is outside with Eddie disposing of the cat and Clark comments on the sewer gas. Clark goes inside and whoosh tree gone.

Stop questioning a classic.
He greased a sled and immediately shot down the slope like a cannon.

This. How can you nitpick the scene with the tree catching fire while forgetting that scene? Also...how can you forget how far the Santa sleigh shot into the air after the explosion while, at the same time, Aunt Bethany is serenading the event with her rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner? Those two scenes alone should be sufficient enough to tell you what kind of movie it is.

Why didn't Clary climb through the hole when he fell through the ceiling?
Why did he decide to spend all day in a freezing attic? The sheetrock was already fricked. Just kick the rest of it out.

Its all about the sap, and Clark's pension for D/C christmas lights. A solid aluminum pole would have never caught fire. The cat would have never been distracted by the tinsel.

Christmas trees burn like bottle rockets covered in gasoline

Knowing that Rusty grows up to become Leonard Hoffstetter kind of hurts the movie imo
