Did Quint hook Jaws or was it just a game fish?

I've always wondered this.

If he had hooked Jaws and was strapped to the reel, Jaws would have snatched his arse right out that chair.

No. If I remember correctly he reeled it in to the leader. That fish would have stripped the reel of all the line.

Game fish can’t eat thru piano wire.
Find it odd that Jaws would hang around the boat and not take off.
Kind and of an odd scene.

In the novel, Quint uses a fetal dolphin as bait (causing Hooper to vomit) and yes, hooks the shark.

That's not how reels/line work.

If I remember correctly, as soon as he broke the line, he scolded Hooper then made him get on the wheel and motor North east. Pretty fast. As a fisherman, if you break off a fish or lose a fish, you dont pick up shop and move on.

I always thought that was weird. If he really thought he had just lost the fish he was after, no need to move to another spot

He doesn't say, which is why Hooper goes cold. He asks Quint if the dolphin is a baby, to which he replies "unborn," which makes Hooper vomit. Obviously, it would be a crime for Quint to intentionally kill a dolphin and take the fetus, but back then, the fishing laws allowed for dolphins accidentally caught in nets and on long lines. But Quint is even saltier in the book, so it's heavily implied that he did it on purpose to get the best shark bait.

Hooper also fricks Brody's wife, fyi, but dies in the shark cage at the end.

Yeah, that would have detracted from movie Quint's likeability. We had the paperback when I was a kid, but I never read it. I was, however, intrigued by the fully lit photo of Chrissie running on the beach...
