Did Santiago Deserve the Code Red?

I say yes.
He was a sub-standard marine who apparently couldn't run from here to there without collapsing.
He ratted on a member of his own unit.
He went over the head of Dawson, Kendrick, Markinson and Jessup.
Hell, Markinson ended up killing himself over it. frickin tragedy.
I think the marines, rifle security windward and our nation as a whole is better off without him grabbing a rifle and standing a post.
His death, while tragic, probably saved lives!

Technically after two failed PTs, he should have been discharged from the Marine Corps.
Anyone who can pass the physical requirements at USMC boot camp but then has trouble with standard PT tests upon deployment should be medically evaluated as well to see if something has changed.
A decent commander would have recognized that Santiago was trying hard to get in shape and pass, and failing, and would have had a medical examination done, or would have seen Santiago was NOT working hard, was getting lackadaisical, and would have dishonorably discharged him after 2-3 failed PT tests.
So no, murder was not justified. The court was correct in arresting all his commanding officers.

Wouldn't there be some signs of a serious medical issue, like chest pains, shortness of breath, and fatigue?

Military docs arent known to be the best. Abnormal heartbeat could have developed later on, etc

NO...Only because he had a medical condition. Santiago went to the Doctor and was recorded he had symptoms that should have required further testing.
It's clear the Jessup pressured the Doctor to cover up the fact that Santiago probably had a heart condition that got missed. Caffey should have called for an autopsy.
Had the Doctor not fricked up the examination Santiago probably would have been medically discharged.

That's why it had to be poison doctor? Because if you put a man with serious health condition on duty and that man died you'd have alot to answer for wouldn't you?

while expeditious and certainly painless, that just isn't, in a matter of speaking, the American way. Jessup felt it was his duty to train the lad.

One would think, which sort of solidifies the possibility that his commanders were turning a blind-eye to it all. The thing is, in one of the roughest deployments a modern soldier could have, why a "substandard" Marine (by their definition) would be kept around seems particularly suspect.
Of course, pointing out that they kept running him in PT despite constantly failing - and then all of this happening - would have made the court case a lot shorter.
