Disney's track record lately hasn't been good. Avatar was a huge hit but it was a Fox holdover movie. I am curious as to what big hits they may have this year.

I listed below the remaining blockbuster caliber movies they have scheduled for the year. I left off the smaller films.

Of this list, which do you think have the potential to be huge hits (over a billion globally)? I put my thoughts below.

May 5 - Guardians of the Galaxy 3 - This should be a big hit but buzz has been mixed. It is James Gunn final film with Disney.

May 26 - Little Mermaid - This film features probably the biggest race swap ever for a major character. The music is iconic and will draw the women in. Estimate is $235-305 million domestically. Not sure how it will play globally.

June 16th (PIXAR) Elemental - HAvent heard much about this one.

But what I have read it sounds like another Pixar preachy movie. People want fun in their kids animated movies. See Super Mario and learn from it.

June 30 - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny - I really wanted this one to be good. I grew up on Indiana Jones and Harrison Ford. But I fear it will be complete arse. They have done many reshoots and that is always a bad sign.

July 28- Haunted Mansion (remake) - They already did this once as an Eddie Murphy vehicle and it bombed. Not sure what the angle will be with this new version. Does not look promising.

Update November 10 - The Marvels - I edited to add in the Marvels. How could I have forgotten to include this one? Disney will release Marvels and Wish in back to back weeks. Even they know how bad these will suck.

November 17 - Wish (Disney Animation) - This looks like the wokiest film to ever emerge out of wokeville. Hard pass.

If Disney is going to change the narrative, both Guardians and Little Mermaid better hit big in May. Otherwise it looks like a long year for the mouse.

I was a huge MCU fan and saw the first two Guardians films in theaters. I don’t care to see the new one unless I hear it’s great.

These films will definitely not change the narrative about Disney

Put aside all of the woke stuff. Illumination has been dunking on Pixar for a while now

It can’t possibly be good. Harrison Ford was way too old in Crystal skull. Now it’s just dumb.

I’ll see GotGv3 out of respect for the previous 2.

I could see myself being drug to Little Mermaid because it was my wife’s favorite cartoon growing up. I did show her the picture all her sisters and told her, guess Trident had a girl in every port. She laughed.

I gave credit to the board for that.

I updated the OP to add in the Marvels. I had blotted that horror out of my mind.

It will be a man hating festival the likes of which the world has never seen.

Honestly, the more I think about the more Disney should just write off this year. Just put all this garbage on Disney plus and call it a day.

Seems to be a mantra on this board, and I’m not sure why.

Disney is trash.

I hope they collapse under their own greed and stupidity.

I mean, $182 million worldwide versus a $90 million budget isn't exactly a bomb.

Likely not as big as they waned it to be, but it still made decent bank.

The original GOTG was brilliant, while the second was just ok, and their inclusion in the Endgame movie took some of the fun out of their game. I expect this last one to follow the downward trajectory and be just ok. They would be wise to return to the blueprint of 1, but we shall see. The actress that plays Ariel has eyes that are more on the side of her head than a fish. Just plain ugly. Not sure how that will play. The rest is garbage. At least they aren't trying to release a Star Wars vehicle.

But you factor in the studio only sees about half of that box office back and usually these reported budgets don't include marketing which for a Disney movie was definitely in the tens of millions.

It's not a disaster, but it def qualifies as a bomb.

As for the list in the OP, it's going to be a year full of bombs for Disney. Both Pixar and Disney Animation are sending out overly preachy crap that kids won't go see.

GotG 3 should have been massive, but Marvel fatigue is real and there are enough negative reviews out there that leads me to believe it's another meh effort from the MCU.

Disney animation was getting destroyed when they released TLM. The score from that movie got people talking and it was a huge hit that then paved the way for arguably their most successful run.

An individual might not agree but the music was received extremely well and really turned it around for the studio.

There's no doubt songs from that era were important, they freaking charted.

Isn't word on the street that they are changing some of the songs and adding "new" songs, too?

Netflix's Cleopatra...swapping for an actual historical character is bigger than a fictional one. That being said, the original mermaids (as described by Homer) were monsters much akin to a hawk-like bird with a large head of a woman and sharp teeth. So, for factual accuracy, that is what the new Aerial should look like.

Just watched the trailer, it looks like it could be pretty good. Although it seems just more of a love story and I'm not sure who the antagonist is in the story based on the trailer.

The directors was the director for The Good Dinosaur, which is a pretty underrated Pixar movie. Two of the writers main work is My Name is Earl and the other writer was the guy behind Inside Out.

This one actually has some pretty good potential.
