Marvel stealing the name Captain Marvel out from under DC is one of the great all time dick moves in comic book history. Even though the companies have worked things out and are fairly tongue in cheek about the two characters having the same name.
If both movies do well and get sequels they should have the lead actors do a quick cameo in each other's movie.

This topic made me realize that Lawrence Fishburne is in both cinematic universes. He plays Perry White in the DC universe, and he was just that rival scientist in Ant-Man

DC did it to themselves.
ETA: As DC always has.
Like letting a newspaper torpedo the midpoint of Tom Kings current Batman run.

They stole it from the comic fans and pop culture, not DC. DC didn't license the Fawcett characters until 1971, to publish in 1972. It's still obscene that they took the character name of the best selling superhero from the Golden Age of comics and slapped it on a minimal character just to prevent anyone from getting 100% of the original Captain Marvel.

Not in this case. Branding the Marvel Family under the Shazam! name was their best case scenario. The downside was that the Captain Marvel character was associated with TV shows and comics with the Shazam name to the point where a couple of generations had grown up knowing him as the Shazam! superhero. The pop culture mentions of Captain Marvel on sitcoms and films died out in the early 70's.

Black Goliath.
We call him Black Goliath.

I have always thought DC really didn't know what to do with Captain Marvel. Individual writers by all means... but the company as a whole just never quite got how to use him. They finally settled into this odd, he's not as powerful as Superman, but since he's magic he can beat Superman role where they hardly ever featured him.
As is usual... the best modern version of Captain Marvel has been in the DC animated shows. He had one great episode in JLU and then a few guest shots in Young Justice that were just spot on.
Oddly enough, right up until they completely fricked up the character, Mary Marvel in DC was great. Perhaps because they didn't have a Supergirl for a lot of the time she was around in DC comics. The combination of god stompingly powerful but naive young super heroine they almost always nailed. Its a shame she didn't get a major run in the Teen Titans.

I'm not feeling Zachary Levi as Shazam.
