Basically, the rumor is that the last scenes have been shot, the regeneration of the most recent Doctor has taken place, and Ncuti Gatwa has set his focus on going to Hollywood.

To date, there's no contract for a Christmas special to be filmed, which is so often a staple of the Doctor Who series.

quote:

“This story is incorrect, Doctor Who has not been shelved,” the network’s statement, which was published by Radio Times, reads. “As we have previously stated, the decision on season 3 will be made after season 2 airs. The deal with Disney Plus was for 26 episodes – and exactly half of those still have to transmit. And as for the rest, we never comment on the Doctor and future storylines.”

I remember when they were bringing back the showrunner and Tennant and I thought, "Oh good."

And it got WORSE.

The issue is that it isn't that Doctor Who is supposed to be "non-political" but rather the politics were supposed to be of a more morality story when used. Like when the Fourth Doctor travels back and has the opportunity to kill the Daleks BEFORE they become the villains that they are. It's the same thought experiment as "Should a time traveler kill Hitler as a baby?"

This goes against current day BBC ideas.

Unlikely. 2 things need to happen before that's even a remote chance.

1. Erase the Jodi & Ncuti era nonsense. That means undoing the Timeless Child garbage that changes the entire origins of EVERYTHING.

2. Get a proper Doctor.

Which the BBC will refuse and fight tooth and nail.

Anyone who’s watched an episode post-Capaldi knows why the ratings are shite

Brought back Jerry Goldsmith (music) and Katherine Tate (Donna) too. Didn't help. Worse still, they made Donna the mother of the *trans kid 'Rose', and then the 2 of them paired up to berate and mock the Tennant Doctor ... so pathetic to watch.

And speaking of David Tennant, he's gone through severe TDS or something like it. Just watching interviews of him from years ago and comparing to who he is today is like 2 entirely different people. He's a neurotic wreck, where as before he was funny, happy, casual and seemed a genuinely decent guy. Something broke him in the past 10 years. I can guess as to what.

*Trans kids aren't real

I wasn't a fan of the Capaldi era, the writing just sucked. We went from Ecclesston's darker and more sarcastic Doctor, to Tennant's iconically positive Doctor with some absolutely excellent world-building, to Matt Smith's goofy and naive Doctor who also had some decent world-building to Capaldi's tired-old-man Doctor who saw the writers throw away all the previous world-building for what I felt was pretty much just stock B-rated scifi scripts.

I thought the Capaldi writing was bad, but from there it went down like the writers and showrunners were purposely trying to make the worst show they possible could.

Admission: I have never seen a single episode of the show. I actually don't even know the premise.

Legit question: what are the chances of someone in 2025 with entirely fresh eyes enjoying the show? Is it at anthology or is it somehow linear?

Start with Eccleston, end with Matt Smith.

You'll be fine and should enjoy it.

Capaldi was passable if meh.... After him, the show is driven off a very very sharp cliff very quickly.

It started in the early 60’s. 2005 is a great starting point to pick it up for novices. That’s when I really got into it.

Dipped out in 2017 or so. (Doctor Karen)

I'd just rather watch the original series. I stopped watching the new when the writing went to shite.

There's lore, but it does tend to more or less get relaunched with each new Doctor (new starring actor). Show has a different feel and style under different show runners and with different stars. Some series from the 60's and 70's will have one main story over the course of the season. In other seasons, it's more episodic.

Like others suggest, if you're new, it's probably easiest to find the first season with Eccleston or David Tennant and start from there.

There is a Doctor Who channel on Pluto TV (free to stream online or thru their app), but I think they usually have the 70's shows if you want to see some of the classic stuff.

Rumor is they are putting a 5 year pause on the show. I wish they could somehow retcon everything after Matt Smith but a 5 year pause is the next best thing.

I could agree with that, but it'll never happen. Not with the BBC. I liked Capaldi, but his Doctor was horribly handled. Clara was his companion for too long, they didn't mesh very well, turned her character into a mess. No longer the The Impossible Girl.

After that, and then hearing Doctor Karen was on the way, I tapped out.

The writing has been terrible for a long time. Moffat wrote some of my favorite early stories but he was a total disappointment running the show. The over reliance on the magic wand even early on killed the show for me.

Original who, it was a fracking screwdriver. New Who it was a magic wand able to do anything and it was used as a Deus Ex Machina over and over and over again.

Some people will blame the last couple of doctors. I blame the shoddy writers and writers with no talent plus their own agenda.

This probably can’t happen bc the BBC is run by your ideological brethren. This is what happens when your people take over properties.

Disney had a plan. To buy Marvel, Star Wars, Doctor Who, etc.. and just make consumable content to grow the streaming service.

Problems began when they put all their effort in buying IP's, insert the message. Creativity and imagination? Screw it. The audience will be captive dupes who won't know the difference anyways, so just crank out cheap stuff and the money will just flow in on pallets.

Only, it hasn't really worked like that.

Start with Eccleston

It's a shame he quit after 1 season because of Davies'. LINK /

quote:

In 2018, Eccleston revealed that he was attacked by the UK tabloids and blacklisted by the BBC over his decision to quit. At New York Comic Con the following year, he made it clear that it wasn't Doctor Who itself that he'd had a problem with ("I loved playing the character and I loved the world," he said). It was what was going on behind the scenes with showrunner Russell T. Davies and two unnamed producers that he didn't like. "I left only because of those three individuals and the way they were running the show... I felt, 'I'm going to play the Doctor my way and I'm not going to get involved in these politics.' And that wasn't workable so off I went," Eccleston said
