Yes, it gets better but objectively if you don't like the first season then it's probably not for you. The beauty of Mad Men is the period depiction and character development. For someone who grew up during the 60's and 70's, I consider it a timeless masterpiece. My husband and I both love it.

It's my GOAT show. Which is strange since it is essentially a soap opera. It's just that it is the best soap opera ever written. By a mile. It does get better, but as many have said if a couple of the episodes didn't hook you already, it just may not be for you.
It will not have any Breaking Bad "HOLE-EE shite" moments, but it has incredibly well written stories and dialogue.

I love Mad Men because they are running a business and are really good at what they do. My favorite part is all the business maneuvering. Mergers, spin-offs, acquisitions.

I was enjoying it up to the point they went independent. Then I started loving the show.
Spoilers::::
Great character development/interesting characters that could be ignored for three episodes but when they come back on it is like they never left. Acting is great too. The scene when draper and Betty are getting a divorce is GOAT acting by Jon Hamm.
I may start watching it again.

I generally tell people if they're not hooked by Season 1, Episode 13 "The Wheel" and Don's presentation then there's a good chance you won't like it. I feel like that was the "wow" point of its writing for me.

It's a hard show to binge watch.
I disagree. I binged it and thought it was awesome.

Season 1 is style with very little substance. The plots thickened in season 2 especially once Don hit California. That was the turning point for me. I loved season 3. Nothing like Roger's politically incorrect singing.

Also, Roger.. At what point did his character stop being just a dirty old entitled man, and become a character whose every word I listened for?

Like a book you can't put down.

Great point. He's become my favorite character. I love the scene when he imitated Megan's French song!

It took me forever to get through season 1. I frankly found the show to be boring and quite depressing albeit beautifully acted and shot.
However, I stuck with it because of how much praise the show received and by midway through season 2 I was hooked.
Now I consider it one of my top 5 shows all time. I'm glad I stuck it out.
