I think Clint Eastwood being a potential choice for the role of Superman that went to Christopher reeve May be the all time potential miscast.

She was considered for Cameron Diaz's role in Gangs of New York and I wish we could've seen it

Not caught up with the thread, but here's a few I've always heard. Some may be duplicated already:

Han Solo - Christopher Walken/ Nick Nolte/ Burt Reynolds

Princess Leia - Cissy Spacek

Carrie White (Carrie) - Carrie Fisher

Shrek - Chris Farley

Vivian Ward (Pretty Woman) - Molly Ringwald

Black Widow - Emily Blunt

Kurt Russell as Crash Davis

From Bing Copilot:

Kurt Russell was initially considered for the role of Crash Davis in the baseball classic Bull Durham. However, fate took a different turn. Russell had agreed to play Crash, but when he returned from a trip out of town, Kevin Costner secured the part. Interestingly, other actors like Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford were also in the running for the role. Costner’s determination to win the part included hitting the batting cages with director Ron Shelton to showcase his commitment1. Sometimes, the game of casting is as unpredictable as a knuckleball pitch!

IIRC Farley recorded a large portion of the lines for Shrek then died.

Huh?

Yeah, this is one of the most widespread re-casting stories of the past 20 years.

Hackman would have been better. There's nothing at all intimidating about Hopkins.

I can't believe this movie gets so much love. Hopkins performance is so campy and hammy, Lecter should be a Batman villain with Adam West. When I watched SotL, I busted out laughing when he was on screen. My beagle, Arnie, is more menacing than Hopkins on screen.

Tim Colceri was replace by R. Lee Ermey for the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket.

As a consolation, he was given the role of the door gunner who uttered the much-quoted lines "Get some!"

I couldn't see anyone better cast for Hartman. Perfect.

I don’t think Kurt plays a better Crash Davis than Costner, but this sis one I wish I could compare side by side.

Nicholas Cage as Superman wouldn’t have been right although I respect how they showed how it could have looked in the flash movie.

Yikes. Actress who played her was so much hotter.
