He’s totally a “that guy”. I don’t think he’s had a role I didn’t like. Reese Bobby, The data guy from VEEP, Ari’s friend in Entourage.

I don’t know why he hasn’t had a bigger movie career. Feel like he’s always solid and can show good range.

ETA: of course Lumbergh in Office Space

He’s amazing. Even as the villain in Pineapple Express he was cool and likable.

Also Lumbergh in Office Space. Mike Judge is a master at character creation in movies, Gary Cole and Stephen Root both made that movie for me.

Edit: Guess I'm "sorta" not alone on this one.

He played an incredible role in what could’ve been the greatest tv series of the 90s: American Gothic. This was a dark mystery series in which he played a devil posing as a sheriff in a small town. The show was smartly written to its own detriment. It would’ve shined in modern tv times with the way audiences consume clever tv series, but back then it struggled to find an audience. The network never even gave it a chance.

Seriously this was a great series, and he crushed that role. Lucas Black was fantastic in it as well.

American Gothic is always one of those series that gets mentioned for being canceled too early. I agree, Cole's role was fantastic, and the show would've thrived today on cable or streaming.

CBS dramas in the 90s included lighthearted fare like Walker Texas Ranger, Murder She Wrote, Dr Quinn, Diagnosis Murder, Touched By An Angel, etc. Even Northern Exposure fit in nicely despite its quirkiness.

Then American Gothic suddenly premiered as a dark, demented black sheep of the CBS lineup that audiences didn't know what to make of. It's kind of amazing it even got picked up for a full season.

He just didn't hit when he was prime leading man age (and that was when you kind of had to pick film or TV, and he was more widely known as a TV actor in the 1980s). He does show up in many, many quality projects.

My first awareness of him was in a made for TV film about Jeffrey MacDonald called Fatal Vision. The actual lead was Karl Malden (who was outstanding), but Cole as MacDonald, a green beret doctor who is imprisoned to this day for the murder of his family, was also excellent in this role. Comparable to Harmon as Ted Bundy in The Deliberate Stranger, aired around that same time.

He was also Custer in Son of the Morning Star (another television film that is undderrated). He played Edgar Mitchell in HBO's outstanding From the Earth to the Moon, mainly paired with Ted Levine (playing Alan Shepard) in the Apollo 14 episode.

Obviously he was brilliant in Office Space. He was great in the Brady movies.

Outside of his voice work (Harvey Birdman, Family Guy, several others), his biggest impact is going to be his ensemble work on The West Wing and Veep.

While I'm not as surprised as you that he didn't become a big star, I am surprised he hasn't won more individual awards for acting, just based on the quality of his work overall.

Cindy, you know by tattling on your friends, you're really just tattling on yourself. By tattling on your friends, you're just telling them that you're a tattletale. Now is that the tale you want to tell?

He's another actor in a long list of actors who had a memorable role early in his career on Miami Vice. He played a smuggler named Jackson Crane in a season two episode called Trust Fund Pirates.

Yeah, it was weird he didn't get more roles early after Fatal Vision. He was perfect in that. Played another great villain in A Simple Plan. Brent Briscoe was really brilliant in that too. Gary Cole, Brent Briscoe, and Tim Blake Nelson are three actors that should have gotten more work. Lumbergh will always be the role he is remembered for. He’s ridiculously underrated on range alone. He’s one off the all time under the radar guys that as soon as you see his face you think you are going to enjoy the show.

That’s what generated this thread. Don’t watch NCIS but saw a commercial for it and thought damn that’s what he’s up to these days? Just made me think how he’s grinder out a solid career in TV and nails it every time. Not sure why he never got more than sporadic tv roles and bit parts in movies.

Maybe that’s just his lane and he totally nails it.
