I watched an episode last night on pawn stars where the expert said that the guy's letter from George Washington had a forged George Washington signature. BUT, he then said that it was still worth 4000.00 bucks because it was a reprinted letter instead of the original.
are they shady?
I mean...if it's a forgery, then it should be worth peanuts, right?

I don't know, but I have a buddy that is an expert on forgery. Would you mind if I asked for his opinion on it?

You might be getting something confused. It could be it was an original letter, but the signature was written by a secretary or a stamp. Then I think it still would be quite valuable, but not as if GW would have signed it himself.
But hold on, let me call a friend of mine who's an expert on George Washington signed letters and I'll get right back with you.

maybe the secretary signed it because the expert said that it definitely wasn't George's signature. doubt it was a stamp back then though.

Yeah, I'm just going off past episodes. Usually if the signature and the letter is a fake, then it is worth nothing. If there is still $4,000 in it, something is legit, and it may be that it's an official letter with someone else's signature.

The paper was correct to the time period. The expert indicated that the neither the body of the letter nor the signature were George Washington's hand writting. He said that what happened back then was that other people would make a copy of letters as no copy machines were available. I think I agree with the OP; just because the paper is liget how does it get valued at $4000.

I mean, its just gonna sit in the case collecting dust. Its not like people come in every day looking for a copy of a paper written by George Washington...
