Just because it’s more intense than The Hurt Locker doesn’t mean that the acting and writing is better. The Hurt Locker had an all-star cast with amazing writing. There’s a reason why that film got so many Academy Awards.

The Hurt Locker

Absolutely the biggest piece of trash ever put on film. Made for people that never went to Iraq, Afghanistan or Syria.

The worst "war" film every made (by a female civilian).

That’s basically what it is and nothing more. Nothing about the writing, acting and plot for this film is special at all. Saving Private Ryan and Hurt Locker are infinitely better films to watch and much more entertaining.

Just because a film isn’t made for veterans doesn’t mean it’s a bad film.

This is a good point. SeALs are the best we have. Best physically and mentally and the best trained.

I think people have some misconception that because someone made it through a selection process to a specialized unit that they are somehow impervious to the realities of combat.

They aren’t super heroes…they are still human beings.

THL was my introduction to shitty movies winning a bunch of awards. Young TheDucks watched it thinking it’d be a masterpiece then was severely underwhelmed and thought something was wrong with me

This movie drops that misconception quick. And I was surprised how young Seals are.

I didn't think it was long enough. The realism was great but that's all there is. The movie/story itself is not that good.

Curious what combat vets have to say about this movie vs Hurt Locker. I remember vets shitting all over Hurt Locker. Warfare seems like a movie "for the veterans".

Hurt Locker is fricking garbage

i'm going to go see Warfare this weekend and i will report back my thoughts on it. i'm a combat vet, but i'm not in the infantry. FWIW one of my buddies who is a combat vet and also an infantry officer texted me over the weekend and told me that i need to go see this movie ASAP.

want to clarify, because i said the Hurt Locker is garbage in my previous post. it's garbage in the sense that it is not at all realistic. it's a fine generic action / war movie. but at the time, it was lauded as this hyper-accurate depiction of the War on Terror and it is not that at all. i think that's why a lot of people have beef with the movie. but yeah, it's fine for entertainment value.

Excuse me, but almost all movies require a theatrical viewing to be fully appreciated because of the cinematography (even interior shots)
and sound quality. I don’t care how
good your home equipment may be. It’s not the same.

Just went because of this thread.

The sound was incredible. And it was filmed well. Gotta give props there. I felt as if I was in it with them. That was impressive.

As far as the movie itself, the buildup took 20 min of the 1.5 hrs..

And I have no idea what the first scene with the aerobics shite had to do with anything at all.

Not sure if I've ever seen anything so out of place in a movie.

Sound and filming is an A

Movie is a B-..

That wasn't what they set out to create. They wanted to recreate an 80 minute, real life event with as much accuracy and attention to detail as possible based on photos, accounts, and memories of those involved. And they wanted it to happen in real time with no time compression whatsoever. Very unique in that regard.

This is true. Hurt Locker was great from a filmmaking perspective but terrible from a realism perspective, though some liberties had to be taken in the interest of time and engagement. If you had a "realistic" movie about an EOD team it would last 7 hours and be boring as shite

Come on, Bleeds

It does a million things.

- It subverts expectations for the people who are expecting a SPR-style opening
- It's a fun reference for those who were deployed - I promise you every vet that sees this will think of an identical downtime experience they had with their unit
- Reminds you that these are basically kids
- Gives everyone humanity/character and depicts their camaraderie in a 2 minute segment without needing a word of dialogue
- Serves as a stark frame of reference to really highlight the contrast when it transitions to the dark silence

I would argue that this ends up being a classic war movie opening. It's great and highly memorable.

Gotta have that contrast and show how mundane it is when you're not in combat. They really make it a point to show how tedious and miserable the comms are

Played hooky again today for a lunch time viewing. Thankfully no old timers in the seats lol, in fact I was the only one in the theater.

When they start firing off rounds inside the building, I think it was the mk 48 (I don’t know guns), it was so loud and deep I could feel my chair rattle. I also agree with your take on the opening. I thought it was an efficient & effective way to introduce the characters.
