The date was November 16, 2001, and Harry Potter book nerds the world over (myself included) converged on our local movie theater to watch the film adaptation of the first novel in the Harry Potter book series. My grandmother took the 14-year-old version of me to the 4:30 PM showing because my arse couldn't be bothered to wait until 7:00 PM to see the movie with my friends. I was just too excited to wait any longer.

It grossed $90 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. - at that time a box office record - on its way to a total worldwide haul of $900 million. It was the highest grossing film of the year 2001.

I remember being in 5-6th grade and Harry Potter was so popular that it was considered cool to walk around school with the big arse hardbacks

I was just slightly too old for Harry Potter. I was 10 when pokemon came out so the right age there but 15 when I first saw Harry Potter and wrote it off as a kid's show (which even in retrospect the first movie is a way different/lighter tone than the rest of the series)

I forgot all about this. I was about the same age and every one at school had that book in their hands, even though it could have gone in their backpacks.

HP is always going to be my sentimental favorite series bc I grew up at the perfect age with it. Running out to stores at midnight in the mad rush to get the new book then reading all weekend before chatting with everyone at school about what would come next, or going with friends to an energetic midnight showing of every movie with a comic-con like atmosphere ... some of my fondest memories of those coming-of-age teenage years.

I hate that I didn’t get into it until after the third movie. I wasn’t reading fiction at the time so I didn’t listen to other people who suggested it to me.

My whole family went to Books a Million at midnight and we waited in line for the last book. We still watch the movies regularly.

The staying power is pretty unbelievable. We just finished watching all the movies with my 5 year old, and she's now the biggest Harry Potter fan in the house.

And shortly after that, Hairy Pooper and the Sorcerers Bone was released.

Same, almost to the tee. Lol.

I grew up with the books at the movies at probably the perfect age and now I can get my kids into the movies for now and books later.

So now, the controversial question. Is Harry Potter a Christmas movie? I say yes.

My niece and nephew are working their way through the books now, my sister will only allow them to watch the movies after they've finished the book. They're currently up to the Goblet of Fire right now.

Christmas plays a more important role in Harry Potter than it does Die Hard, so I’ve probably got to agree with you for consistency.

Yeah it feels a little wrong I’m not making my kids read the books before the movies as we did, but selfishly I don’t want to wait that long and I’m tired of the same Disney movies and animated shows over and over. One can only take so much.

I remember at a get to together, someone came in and was all excited over another Harry Potter book coming out and nobody had read Harry Potter. It was a kid's book. And then a few years back, I went to the library and told the librarian I needed a recommendation on something to read. She said read Harry Potter. So I did. I almost gave up until I made it past the first 50-60 pages or so but then suddenly it was magic. I was hooked. It is a very good book series.

Looking back on it now, I really enjoyed the first 4 books or so but I am not so sure about the last 3 books. A little too dark and negative. It also seemed to me that JK Rowling had difficulty throughout the series as a woman portraying the male Harry Potter individual. Too often, he seemed to react more like a girl than a boy. But as a whole, she succeeded in creating a very intriguing world of wizards.

I always felt the first 2 books were very childlike then things pick up in 3 when you found out Sirius is framed and Peter betrayed Harry's parents and had been in hiding all these years. Then in 4 when Cedric is killed and Voldemort is back felt like the story from that point carried much more weight. 4-7 are the best books IMO.

My only gripe with the last few books is Rowling shoehorned these horcruxes in that are pretty much ripoffs of Tolkien's one ring except she made 7. And yes I know she took many things from Tolkien but most artists get inspiration from the greats before them. The horcruxes seemed to be egregious ripoffs though.

You're right about how she struggled writing Harry especially as he got older.

I don't agree with the premise of reading it first since I only read (ackshually Audible) the books after seeing all of the movies multiple times and it answered many questions that I had from the movies but I am not seething mad at any of the movies like a good chunk of "book purists" tend to be with some of the films.

Lucky. I went to a private Baptist school and they banned us from reading Harry Potter. Witchcraft is of the devil
