Pyewacket is a solid horror flick I saw a few nights ago if you like movies about the occult. It’s a little bit of a slow burn, but I really enjoyed it. I think it’s on Hulu right now.

Rec
Inside
Them
Orphanage
Funny Games

Based on the recommendations of some of these threads I watched It Follows and Sinister tonight. Both were great.

BTW, I just noticed the AMC app has a ton of awesome horror movies right now. Definitely check it out. Tons of horror.

It’s more a Halloween movie than straight horror, but I fire up Frailty every October. Early Matt McConaughey and Bill Paxton. Not many people have seen it, but it’s a great flick.

I'm not a scary movie guy and average MAYBE 1 per year, in october. I got the itch recently and picked 3 from this thread to watch the last 2 days, spoilers below.
It follows- I had heard great things and I was pleased with it. Good pacing and good concept. I would have liked to know more about the origin of the thing which was never explained. Overall no true complaints though.
As above so below- Another good one with great pace. Never really a dull moment. Due to being in the catacombs most of the movie there was always a sense of impending trouble. A couple good jump scares as well as psychological. It ended a bit abruptly but whatever, I was glad the main characters escaped and lived. I thought the alchemy stone angle was a bit cheesy though. This stone can instantly heal up wounds like the water from Jesus's chalice in last crusade just seemed hokey. Then they realize she has the wrong stone and the power is in her along because she looked in the mirror..cmon. Similar to It follows though, no true complaints and I enjoyed my time watching it.
Hereditary- total garbage. I really wish I had my 2 hours back on this one. Glacially slow pace, mostly boring, not really much happens throughotu the whole movie. And the things that do happen aren't really 'scary'. Much like It follows we're never really given a backstory on the main premise, in this case that these milquetoast, whitebread, plain janes from the midwest are somehow channeling ancient demonic spirits to inhabit bodies and submit people to worship. Oh but wait, they have a book on it! That explains it
Overall I just really didn't find this movie enjoyable in any way.
What was surprising, or I guess interesting, to me was the reviews of AASB and Hereditary. AASB was a total dud from critics and considered boring and elementary, but the audience score was mostly favorable. Hereditary was praised by critics as scary as hell and a true masterpiece of horror cinema but was mostly given shite ratings by regular people. Funny how that works out ha.

I loved As Above, So Below. Just thought it was a cool concept that they pulled off pretty nicely. And it was legit creepy and scary most of the time, and it wasn't JUST due to the location. I felt like there was this impending doom vibe, like you mentioned, and it was palpable at times.
Heriditary is one that I have considered watching lately based on things I've seen about it. Your review gives me pause a little bit.

Hereditary was great, but you have to watch it properly. It's slow and uses a lot of non-horror to build things up for the climax.
If you're distracted it won't really marinate in you. I made that same argument in my Antrum thread (although Antrum is not nearly the same quality of movie). Atmosphere and emotion are major parts of the movie and if your viewing is disjointed, it' kind of pointless.
Like watching traditional scary movies at noon in bright light (or worse, on your phone). It won't work and it will auto-suck.

I watched it at night with all the lights off and my phone away lol. I just truly didn't like it. Different strokes and all that...if I was more of a film buff and caught subtle little nuances that I may have missed maybe I'd like it more. But like I said I watch horror once or twice a year and am strictly wanting to be entertained and I just wasn't

Where were you able to watch these? I'm late on watching horror movies before Halloween this year

Entertaining is not how I'd describe it

It's for sure more of a movie for horror fans. I know Cokes so I was speaking go him personally.

I'm sure I'll eventually check it out. There is so much shite I have to watch, and finding time for it is a struggle sometimes. I did start The Autopsy of Jane Doe last night, and watched about a third of it. Digging it so far. And I've been trying to finish up my Community rewatch as well.

Not entertained like busting a gut just entertained as in "that was a good use of my time and I enjoyed the experience". Whether that's from being scared, intrigued, whatever it may be. IF and AASB both held my interest and entertained me throughout while H didn't.

And that's fine, I specifically mentioned it in my previous posts for that very reason. A genre aficionado may have a complete and totally different view than mine since there may be deeper layers to it that just didn't resonate with a layman like myself.
