How do soap operas have a brand new episode every day?

I think he means from a production stand point. Are the cast and crew constantly filming?

I would guess that they film a few days a week and film multiple episodes.

They have a different story/showcase character m-f. Possibly film three or four episode during a filming day work a week then get two/three off. All the stories are usually connected just from another view point.

I have a handicapped sister that lives with my family, and she'll watch Days of Our Lives during the day. I'll occasionally catch part of it with her, and I swear the same shite that was happening last week is STILL playing out today. On top of that, and this is the one that I find fascinating...the demographic that watches soaps must have a shorter attention span than 3 year olds as NO scene ever lasts longer than about 45 seconds. It's incredible when you see it. This may very well be just how they are able to get one in the can every day, as the actors never have to memorize any scene longer than a few lines at a time.

I think there are atill some story lines on Days that were playing out when I used to catch it back in the 80s

1. They work almost every day. When the actor is on vacation, the writers don't write that character a storyline.
2. There are tons of characters, so every actor doesn't have to be working.
3. Production is extremely simple. Sets are already built. Cameras in all the positions. There are never any complicated or expensive shots at all.
4. Writing is very routine and easy. Just about anyone with a pulse could write for a soap opera. Seriously. When they run out of ideas they just have a serial killer or natural disaster roll into town to insert drama into all the characters' lives.

I would think the actors would absolutely hate doing the show after a while. If you're good looking and don't have what it takes to make money in film then I guess it's your best bet. Some of those people will be on the show for 10 plus years though. Kind of like game show hosts. Sounds awful.

I visited the set of General Hospital once. They film the episodes on a rigorous schedule two weeks in advance. And yeah, the plots are pretty formulaic, so the shite writes itself.

And when they're sick you get the old, "the part of_____ today will be played by_____".
