Prime Apollo would've beat him just like Rocky did in the second fight. If you really want to over-analyze it, Clubber was a severely flawed fighter.

It's a tough discussion, being they are fictional characters and all, but Apollo was the best boxer of anyone in the Rocky movies including Rocky. Everyone else is just a puncher. Apollo didn't take Rocky seriously enough in the first fight and it cost him in both fights.

Was Apollo in his prime when he fought Drago?

No.

Apollo was basically the answer to the question "What if Sugar Ray Leonard was a 6'2" Heavyweight?".

In reality, he would have destroyed Rocky and Lang.

In the original movie it felt like Apollo's character was portraying Ali. I think he even threw in a rhyme in there.

He would have won easily.

Lang/Balboa II exposed Clubber. He couldn't deal with movement and boxing. If he didn't come in and rip your head off, he'd fall apart. He was Tyson.

Apollo in his prime easily had better movement than Rocky in his second Lang fight and would have frustrated Lang. If Clubber couldn't deal with Rocky after a few months of running on the beach and chasing chickens, he'd have been lost vs Creed.

Well Rocky says that no one has ever gone the distance against Apollo.

So he's apparently the greatest fighter who ever lived.

His loss to Rocky in Rocky II was his first career loss.

So until Rocky beat him...he had a record of 47-0 with 47 KO's.

Then he wins by decision against Rocky and then gets KO'd by Rocky.

So he's 48-1 going into his fight against Drago. Knocking everyone out but Rocky.

That's better than Tyson who had 50 wins and 44 KO's.

Rocky Marciano had 49 wins with 43 KO's.

Joe Louis had 66 wins with 52 KO's.

So the franchise hypes up Apollo as the greatest fighter of all-time.

From a personality standpoint. Sure.

His speed, footwork, and technique looked more like Leonard than Ali in the ring though IMO.

He beat Rocky by decision, so he was 48-0 with 47 KOs before Rocky beat him.

Fun fact,

Professional wrestler Nikita Koloff almost got the part of Ivan Drago instead of Dolph Lundgren. The final people for casting call were lundgren, Koloff, and Kerry Von Erich

Koloff was deemed too big because you couldn’t see Stallone in the photos or video

At the beginning of his career Tyson was a great boxer. Success or lack of competition in his early career was his biggest downfall.

The better question is - who could have beaten a prime rocky that was trained like Apollo in Rocky III fight 2 and the fight against the Russian.

The whole story of Rocky is about a bum who was a walking missed opportunity. He was fighting on heart and talent alone and didn't fight Apollo until his 30's. Rocky wasn't a young chicken either. He had already fought in 60 fights.

Imagine Rocky being raised and trained like Apollo. That version of Rocky would be unbeatable.

You could also say drugs, women, or lack of a competent mentor & trainer after the deaths of D'Amato and Jimmy Jacobs.

I'm more of a Tyson believer than most. He did really have tremendous footwork and speed at the beginning of his career.

I'm mainly comparing Lang to the Tyson who started to get exposed and slip. One of the great what ifs is whether Tyson could have maintained his skill and dominance against the tougher competition like Holyfield and Lewis if his personal life wasn't decaying.

I'm not necessarily convinced even prime Tyson had the mental makeup to stay locked in vs an opponent who frustrated him for 5-6 rounds. Tyson never had patience to outpoint someone even in his prime.
