Wife is a big Gerard Butler fan, and I'll give any submarine movie a chance... this film was hilariously horrible.
It's on HBO Max and Hulu right now if you have time to murder.
Every character is chewing the scenery. Casting ranges from the cliche (Gary Oldman as the war mongering Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) to the ridiculous (Common as the level-headed rear admiral who gets things done). Butler is the "he's insane but his gut reactions are on the money" sub commander and Toby Stephens is the SEAL Chief who has the brains of a loaded machine gun with the safety off.
Both the American and Russian military are packed with soldiers and sailors who argue with superiors and just do their own thing when it comes to following orders.
Bonus: It's set in current times but for some reason we're in that Red Dawn / Rocky 3 / WarGames cold war mentality.

Funny you mention submarine movies. I randomly watched U-571 on HBO Max the other night. Still as great as I remembered it.

I’ll be watching soon. Lately I’ve been on a kick for horrible movies. Probably because I watched so many top 100 IMDb movies at the beginning of COVID.

chewing the scenery
I've always been under the impression that this is usually used as a compliment.

As a person who has actually deployed on submarines, I found Hunter Killer to be hilariously inaccurate.

Maybe if the performance required the actor to be an exaggeration. Jim Carey chewing the scenery in Ace Ventura is good. Hayden Christensen in Star Wars and Laura Dern in Jurassic Park are bad.

Terrible sub movie. The CGI was embarrassingly and distractingly bad.

Watched it last year.. I liked it.

This is a “so bad it‘s good” favorite in my house.
