Something that has depth and breadth like Kurosawa films.

Is it hopeless or will anyone carry the torch?

I wouldn’t limit your search to primarily films.

Westworld has a great Shogun episode in season 2 and Tokyo Vice on HBO is a good series on Yakuza and modern Japan.

You could watch "Ghost Dog" with Forest Whitaker, and be the first person to understand what the hell is going on in that movie or like it.

13 Assassins is the way to go.

Even if you are short on time and just want to skip to the big action scene, it’s worth it.

It’s really damn great.

Watching The Last Samurai after seeing Paul Mooney’s in depth review and analysis on the film is life changing.

There's apparently a Shogun series coming to Hulu in 2024 BTW.

There was a stretch in the early/mid 2000's where it made a slight comeback.

I'm assuming you've seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. One of the greatest movies of all time. The House of Flying Daggers is equally as good imo. Incredibly underrated. Hero was brilliant. Iron Monkey and Fearless are both worth a watch if you just want to explore the genre. The first IP Man has some of the best Kung Fu ever put on screen.

A non Kurasawa classic is Dragon Inn. Widely viewed as one of the greatest of that genre. Also, if you want a good TV series, Warrior on Max is top tier TV in general, it's just not the older dynasty's, it's set in the late 19th century. Loosely based on real events.

Not gonna be Kurosawa but Lone Wolf and Cub. All 6 are on Max. They are great samurai movies.

There’s actually a good bit of stuff on Max. The Musashi Trilogy is on there. It stars Toshiro Mifune

kinda ruins it after learning that Chamberlain is gay

I don't have another pick but always thought he was somewhat miscast anyway and couldn't hold up against Toshiro Mifune ... but few can

The man asks for Samurai, and you give him Chinese stuff.

Well, yeah. There are Chinese equivalents basically. Not really ronin that you get in certain samurai movies but there are martial arts practices that Chinese modeled after Japanese.
